I have just set up a new HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop. Everything was working
fine for several days, but today, suddenly, it will no longer recognize the
CD/DVD drive. When I insert a disc, it makes the right noises and seems to
spin, but then nothing happens. I've tried it with several discs, and no
discs. It's as if it isn't there.
I went to Device Manager and under CD/DVD drives it lists:
PIONEER DVDRW DVR-K178 ATA DEVICE
I uninstalled and reinstalled, but still can't detect the drive.

Sounds like one of the lasers quit to me. CD/DVD drives has two lasers. One
for CD and one for DVD. Try one or the other. If one type works and not the
other, the laser died.

The last time it worked at all was when I recorded the recovery discs -- a
process that required about two hours.

Is it not recognizing the DRIVE or is it not recognizing the DISC. Two
VERY different things.

This could be a upper /lower filter issue.

I would also try booting with a bootable CD/DVD. The Windows install disc
should do. If it doesn't work (and make sure you enabled CD booting in the
BIOS), then it has nothing to do with Windows itself.

use system restore to take the machine back to an earlier time, if
booting off a cd works. I'm dealing with the same issue on a Toshiba,
and I strongly suspect a windows update caused the problem.
