Default Windows issue - not sure how to qualify it

Hi all,

Not sure if this qualifies as a boot issue or what, but here we go:

* Was surfing the Net on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop running WinXP. While
typing on the keyboard my daughter pressed the power key, which shut the
unit down.
* Next day, tried to fire it up. Windows booted a little slow but nothing
bad, and the logon screen wtih different user buttons came up.
* Clicked on my wife's user button. Personal settings loaded slowly and
the screen displayed her wallpaper. And that's all. No icons, no task bar,
Windows key does not work, nothing but the wall paper and cursor.
* Three finger salute did bring up Task Manager. Lots of processes
running, but zero apps running. I can from that menue shut down, restart,
log on as another user, etc. and have done so. Nothing changes, and the
same behavior exists under other users logon IDs.

What gives? The OS is booting fine, it's just that nothing else happens
after the machine loads the wallpaper and all the background processes that
you typically see.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the abnormal shutdown damaged the Win install on the drive.

Get a USB storage device and a bootable (Ubuntu) Linux CD. Use these to
copy off any critical files you need then try running a Win repair on
the system.

If you have a home network and sharing setup between systems, you should
be able to use the Linux cd to copy your files to another machine.

Well Phil my friend, I suppose this day was coming.

I've never played with Linux at all. I am downloading the OS now and will
create a bootable CD this evening. My concern is learning how to navigate
my way through the file system to get the files that I need before
reinstalling XP.

I am hoping I can get additional help from the group if I can't find my way
around the laptop in this new environment.

Thanks for the tip Phil - beers on me, especially if I get this fixed.

Stay tuned!

It would be easier, if you don't know Linux, to just remove the hard
drive and connect it to another computer using a USB to IDE (or SATA)
converter (about $10 to $20).

Before you do this, you could try this.

Boot into safe mode, if you can (If you can't then ignore this).

From help and support, go into restore my system to an earlier time, and
select a restore point before when your daughter did her party piece.

If you are lucky, this will resolve your problem - if you are not you won't
be any worse off.

With the Task Mgr, run explorer.exe, tell us what happens.

Thanks for the tip - I can boot to safe mode, and I get the same thing as
before - the wallpaper (in this case safe mode wallpaper) and a cursor and
nothing else on the screen.

Thanks for the tip. A dialogue box pops up that says:

explorer.exe

Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was
completed.

This happens when booting to normal or safe mode.

What does that imply?

If I go into set up and have the machine boot from CD with the WinXP install
disk in, will it boot and would I be able to install XP overtop of the
current install?
