Default USB BOOT on Gericom???

It's about M6-T model. CD-Rom drive isn't working, and i need to find a way
to install win XP from usb stick. the part with making winxp bootable usb
stick is done, but i cannot find a bios option for booting from usb drive. I
have put the hdd as a first boot device, in submenu put bootable add-on
cards in front of the hdd., and it still boots from the hdd... Any help??

Many makes and models you can choose manually at POST by tapping the ESC
key. Both my Gateway and Asus EEE PCs are that way. The Gateway though, I
can choose an USB device, but I can't choose which one. Meaning if there is
more than one connected, you don't know which one will try. In my case, it
is always the wrong one. The Asus allows me to pick which one.

Another problem you may run into is that Windows XP (and others I believe)
reinitializes the USB ports as it boots. Which is a real problem when you
are trying to boot Windows from the USB port. There are work arounds though.

There are many ways to make a bootable stick. I use Windows 98SE FDISK,
Windows XP install CD (using the repair option - FIXMBR and MAKEBOOT), or
the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. Which method(s) do you use?

I made it with PeToUSB. It works on my desktop pc, but not on notebook. I
thought of maybe flashing bios with latest version of it, cause this one has
no options at all -.-, but all the pages are in German, so i cannot find
adequate link with maybe some little tutorial..

Is "floppy drive" listed as a boot device? Sometimes that really means
"USB device", not just a floppy drive.

If that doesn't work you're probably SOL without a system bios update.

First thank you for PeToUSB. I was trying to make BartPE bootable from an
USB stick. This works wonderfully. Although this only works for 2GB or less.
Second of all, it only claims to work with BartPE and WinPE. I also make one
with the Windows XP install CD and it worked fine until I tried to boot from
it. Partition error or something popped up. Yours works on one computer for
you?

Since your BIOS doesn't appear to allow USB to be bootable. Other options
like an USB CD drive or an USB hard drive also seems to be out of the
question.

Although on the current hard drive, it can be partitioned for the Windows XP
install CD. There are free partition managers out there and commercial ones
that has a trial versions available. You can use one of them. And then boot
Windows normally and you can run the Setup in the other partition. I believe
that should work fine.

Hi Alan! If you want, I have a spare hard drive here and I can experiment
using one hard drive only and trying to get Windows installed from one drive
alone if you would like. And then I can tell you exactly how to do this.

Okay Alan. My idea is to create a small partition on the hard drive which
contains the Windows XP install CD and make this partition bootable. First
do you have any partition manager software? Second, is it easy for you to
remove that hard drive and add it to another (i.e. external hard drive
enclosure)?

On another subject, did you ever get the Windows XP install CD to boot from
a USB stick on the other computer? I didn't get that to work the first try.
But BartPE works just fine.

As i said, i made one with petousb, but it doesnt seem to work well, i get
the normal msg like when starting boot of winxp from regular cd, and before
the blue screen with driver loading and installation process appears i get
some error message about bios driver. Nevermind that, cause i don't get it
on the laptop, just on my desktop pc.
I'd like to go to your (yet partial) solution - installing winxp from hdd
partition reserved for it.

Okay you will need a partition manager first. I am searching for one for
free or a commercial one that works as trial. You or somebody can help here
too. And how large is your drive? I found one that only works with 8GB
drives or less called Ranish Partition Manager. I have some commercial
partition managers like Paragon, but that won't help you.
