Default Toshiba Satellite 1130 802.11g options?

I have an old Toshiba Satellite 1130 (running XP/home) with a vacant mini-
PCI slot inside just itching for a wireless card. I've currently got
802.11G working with a PCMCIA card, but I don't care for said card hanging
out the side of the case. I think it'll catch on something and do damage.
I don't seem to be able to find a definitive answer as to what cards will
work with this laptop, probably due to its age. I understand some mini-PCI
cards don't work well, and some don't allow the on/off switch to work with
the slot. Can anybody offer up some of their own experiences?

Get an Intel 2200 card (it's both B and G, very good, very inexpensive
(under $10 if you buy it "right" (meaning on E-Bay)) and very generic).

The switch and light won't work, they are proprietary, the card will be
always on unless you turn it off in the software (which is very
convenient to do and the Intel software puts an icon in the system tray).

Your big issue probably is that the laptop wasn't pre-wired for such
cards and you don't have the antennas, which may essentially make
installation impossible.

The notebook might have a slot for a mini-PCI wireless, but is it really
a working slot? First look for two wires, the ends of the antenna that
is mounted in the lid. Second, look for something that has connectors
in the slot; many have no connectors, just some solder at the connection
points.

If there are no wires, you would have to install the antenna yourself,
an almost impossible task. If there are no physical connectors in the
slot, then there is no possibility of installing a card, if you can find
one.

Thanks for the feedback.

The notebook has a mini-PCI slot, both the main+aux antenna wires, including
connectors. I tried plugging in an 802.11g wireless card from a different
laptop (the c840 in the previous thread) and although the Satellite sees it,
it won't sucessfully install drivers for it.

I've read that the broadcom 802.11 chipsets don't work in the Satellite, and
that there's some quirky problem with pin 13 and pin 11 of the mini-pci
slot. It has to do with turning the wireless card on and off using the
switch on the side of the machine.

My hope was that somebody else has already been here, solved this problem
using a compatible card, and is willing to share the solution.

I do this all the time (in Toshiba Satellite laptops with a mini-PCI
slot and prewired for it with the antennas). Get an Intel 2200, get the
drivers from the Intel web site, you should have no problems.

Thanks Barry,

I'll grab one and give it a try. Can't argue with the price. Just out of
curiousity, have you ever tried one of the newer Toshiba branded 802.11B/G
cards based around the Agere/Lucent chip-set? Any idea if they'd work with
the existing lights and on/off switch in this older laptop?

No; no idea.

The best way to get a used Intel 2200 WiFi card is to look up E-Bay
seller "laptopaid" and within their items for sale, do a search on
"WiFi" or "wireless". Sort the card by price, and start with the lowest
looking for one that is an Intel 2200 mini-PCI card FROM THE PICTURE
(their description will usually say something like "WiFi card from
{brand} {model} laptop" ... which for most cases you can ignore). I've
bought about 2 dozen that way, for as little as $3.99 (plus shipping, of
course). Some of them have been bad (about 10%), they will exchange
them if you get a bad one.
