My Compaq Presario v6000*** gives NO WARNING before it shuts down when
the battery gets low. No popup or sound. Battery life itself also
seems short, about 1.5 hour.
has been like this since I bought it, in March 07

Re: No Warning before Presario low battery shutdown
I don't know about Compaq but my thinkpads have an option in the power
saving setups to set the percentage of battery you want to be notified at.
If you dumped all the preinstall programs then you probably won't have an
option. It probably has/had a battery management program.

HP/Compaq set that way also - go to Control Panel - POWER Mgmt
There you'll find different options - desktop/laptop/always on /etc
Under each you can adjust 2 things:
1. WHEN to notify you ( when x minutes left ) , and
2. WHEN to shutdown ( with y minutes left ).
So if you set to NEVER notify you and to NEVER shutdown, it will run until
it dies without warning you. Adjust those 2 settings .
As for lasting only 1.5 hrs, it might just be that way it is set right now
that the battery it always completely drained each time and chemicals are
wearing out ( depends on type: Lithium-Ion, Ni-Cad, etc) One type is best
to recharge with 30-50% left, other is ok to drain.
