I had to replace the HD on a friend's HP ze5600. I reinstalled XP Pro,
and now, sometimes the mouse selects a hotlink just by moving the cursor
over the link. No presses of either button, no pressure on the touchpad
-- if I move the cursor over something, it gets selected. It's really
maddening.
I installed all the drivers I could find including the Synaptics
touchpad drivers on HP's page for this laptop. I tried adjusting the
pressure in the mouse control section; this did change the amount of
pressure I need to move the cursor, but it didn't change the
'auto-select' behavior.

From any folder:
Tools-Folder Options
Change option on General Tab "Click Items as follows" from Single-click to
Double-click

Thanks for the suggestion.
It turned out to be a setting dealing with 'tap zones'. Once I disabled
the whole concept, the problem was solved. Never heard of 'tap zones'...
