Default How to change SATA mode in Toshiba Satellite laptop

Hi
One of my friends has a Toshiba Satellite M-205-S7453 purchased from
Japan. It has Vista and is very slow. He would like to remove vista
and install XP but the XP cd does not detects the SATA hdd. In some
desktops I have changed the SATA mode to IDE emulation in bios and
then XP can detect the hdd without any additional drivers.

I would like to know how to change the SATA mode to IDE emulation/
compatible mode in the bios. I have listed the Bios settings of the
Laptop below:

**************************
The BIOS is Phoenix Trusted Core (tm) set utility. There are six items
in the BIOS menu.

(1) Main

Hard Disk drive: FUJITSU MHW2160BH PL-(S1)
Optical Disk Drive: MA****ADVD-RAM UJ-850S-(PM
Total Memory: 1024MB
System BIOS Version: 1.60

(2) Advanced

Core muti-processing---- Enabled
Dybamic CPU Freq Mode: Dynamic
Inertnal CIR [Disabled] -- This could not be
accessed.
Intel (R) turbo Memory [Enabled]---- This could not be
accessed.

(3) Security

User password: Clear
Supervisor PWS: Clear
HDD user password status: HDD Password Frozen--- This could not
be accessed.
Built-in HDD password: [user only]----------------------
This could not be accessed.

(4) Display

(5) Boot

HDD
FDD
CD/DVD
LAN
USB Memory
(6) Exit

**************************

Thanking you in advance.

Although this is an option in some BIOSs, particularly newer ones, it is by
no means universal. If the BIOS does not support IDS emulation, then the
only way out is to load a SATA driver as part of the install procees. When
you start the XP installation there is a screen that invites you to load a
SCSI driver by pressing F6. This works for SATA drivers as well. The only
problem is that the driver must reside on a floppy disc. If the laptop
doesn't have a floppy disc, then it can be loaded from a USB floppy disc
drive but only if the BIOS has direct support for USB floppies. It cannot
be loaded from a CD or FLASH memory stick.

May be you could be a little more explicit as to how this would help the
OP? I am curious.

Completely irrelevant unless you disclose the method behind your madness.

Go on then. Tell us all how it's done.

You can get there from here, but you have to take a different road.

The problem is that you need an "F6 driver" (see Wikipedia if you don't
know what that is]. It's readily available (from the maker of the
chipset, usually ... e.g. Intel if it's an Intel chipset), but the ONLY
device that Microsoft enabled the setup program to use for reading is
Drive A:, the floppy drive.

Solution 1: Get a USB floppy. It has to be one that is recognized by
the BIOS as a potential boot device (you won't be booting from it, but
if it could boot, it will be accessible for loading an F6 driver].

Solution 2: (much more difficult) Make a new Windows XP install disk
that has the necessary driver "slipstreamed"

It has been suggested that on SOME machines, a USB flash drive can be
made to look like a floppy drive. Maybe, but if so it's machine specific.

It has also been suggested that a bootable CD made from a floppy image
might somehow be useable for this purpose. Again, maybe, but it's never
been explained exactly how.

The problem is that the Windows Setup program asks you if you need to
load an F6 driver, but it does not ask you where the driver resides ...
it expects (and therefore requires) that it's on a floppy diskette drive
accessible as drive A:, and doesn't give you any say in the matter.

As far as I know, there is no way to change the SATA mode to IDE
emulation (which, if you could do it, would avoid the need for the F6
driver in the first place) in this or most other laptops.
