of the keyboard on my gateway notebook, and I cant figure out its
purpose. Maybe a mic, but what a strange location, plus the hardware

Thanks guys, i chatted with the gateway support and they assured me
its nothing....well, whether its a conspiracy or I don't know what,
but now I am even more interested in this piece of trivial knowledge.
It's not a kensington lock hole, too small to be that, and its located
on the plastic platform that surrounds the keyboard. Any other ideas?

That little hole provides access with a pin to a flexible lock on the
strip with the power button. Insert a pin, push down gently, and slide
that strip to the left to access the keyboard retaining screw.
