Does that laptop sport a touchpad? If so, many of them have double tap
setting to left click through the touchpad properties. Then there is a
ClickLock setting as well, so you don't need to hold the left click to
drag and drop. Thus with a touchpad, you don't even need a left click at
all with Synaptics Touchpads anyway. Most of them are Synaptics
Touchpads, btw.

It does have a touchpad, but curiously double tapping doesn't work either.

It is possible it needs to be turned on. Should be able to open Mouse in
the Control Panel and change it. Or if it isn't there, try right
clicking on the touchpad icon in the System Tray. Mine is found in the
latter and it is called "Tap to Click".
