In winxp/pro I cant seem to delete the moviemkr files which I have no
need for. I tried the right clik "del" but says cannot del.
Then I did a dogie search and found 4 files regarding movies and movie
makeing. I tried to del the with Right Clik and "DEL" but again no
luck. Then it told me to go ctrl panel and del from there.
So I did that and when I said remove the files, it again said
it coul'dnt remove them either. The 4 files take up about 4 gigs
of space and my 20 gig HD sure needs more space to defrag the disk.

Try rebooting into a command window; delete from there. Alternatively,
boot from a floppy or cd and delete from that command window. (command
window, erroneously known as DOS window).

Have you tried deleting them from the administrator account in safe mode?

I suspect this is what is causing your problem.

You're welcome. Up until last summer when I went into semi-retirement
I had worked in computer service for over 20 years. I know it can get
pretty confusing when things that used to work aren't allowed any
more. This is just another case of Bill Gates wanting to protect
people from themselves. :-)

I just noticed that you are using XP pro which doesn't require being in safe
mode to get to the administrator account.
If you have the welcome screen, press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get to the
classical logon, enter 'administrator' as the account name. The password by
default is blank (but if you have changed it, enter what you changed it to).
If you still can't delete them, then actually try from safe mode. Press F8
while booting up* (it's easiest to just keep repeatedly pressing it while
booting, but this key enters the BIOS control screen on some systems - just
exit without saving and keep pressing F8). Select 'Safe Mode' from the menu
which should appear. The welcome screen will only list the administrator
accounts of which 'administrator' will be one.
*Strictly F8 should be pressed as the disk drives are detected and listed,
but the time frame for actually pressing the F8 key is quite narrow.

He is running into the infamous windows system file protection. Movie
Maker is part of the base O/S install and, as such, does not allow
itself to be EASILY removed. As I noted to him there are third party
programs that will overcome this "feature".
Tnx guys that shows to go you that info is out there and this
user group always comes to my rescue. That last one really
helped me and will follow the process and see what happens
and if the moviemkr stuff does finally get lost. I think it takes
up about 2 gigs all by its useless self.
