Default Brand of laptop recommended

Hi,

What brand do you really recommend? My mom wants me to get a Dell,
but I'm thinking of getting an Hp, Asus, or Fujitsu. Other brands I
had considered are Lenovo, Ibm and Acer.

It's kind of like ice cream. Some brands are "better", but there are a
lot of "flavors" within each brand, and depending on what "flavor" you
like best, might influence the brand you want to get.

Dell is ok, so is Lenovo (Thinkpad, IBM ... same thing) and Toshiba.

Personally I would avoid HP, Compaq (which is HP) and Sony. The issues
have more to do with service and support than with the hardware itself.

Asus, Acer and Fujitsu are what I'd call "2nd tier", not in terms of
quality as in terms of market penetration & size. Harder to make
comments on their quality, I just don't see them as much.

In all lines, there are significant model-to-model differences; although
I like both Dell and Toshiba, I have seen specific models in both lines
(and almost every other line) that I did not like. Lenovo (IBM,
Thinkpad) is probably the most consistent line, but my impression is
that you will pay more for fewer features than with Dell or Toshiba.

If you are considering Dell, keep an eye on www.techbargains.com for
unadvertised specials that sometimes last only a few hours (to, at most,
about 3-4 days). Sometimes these deals can save you nearly half, but
you have to be patient for a really good deal to come along. They do,
however, at least every few months if not sooner.

I've had pretty good luck with HP. In fact the best computer I ever had was
an HP Pavilion ze5300, which is now seven years old and still running,
although a little slowly now.

As I said, the problems with HP are not with the hardware, but with
support and service. God help you if you have a problem that requires
returning the laptop to HP. I've heard WAY too many nightmare stories
about what followed.

BW - IS Sony service STILL terrible? I remember years ago going
through a nightmare with my VCR and those Sony SOB's at their service
headquarters in NJ. It's too bad if it is because I get the
impression that their laptops are well built.

A lot may depend on which side of the great divide you are on. I have heard
that HP and Sony service leaves much to be desired in the US. But here in
the UK, someone recently had a problem with his Sony and it was collected
repaired and returned in just 2 days. All the more remarkable when we
discovered that it had been all the way to the South of France and back.
All our company PCs are HP and get sorted pretty quickly whenever there are
problems.

Their service and support is not user friendly. God help you if you
change to OS or the hard drive ... they try to cancel the warranty. And
they won't help you with drivers very much either, they have what they
have, in a format that usually can only be used with the OS the computer
came with, and you can forget about anything else or any flexibility.
Service manuals are almost impossible to come by as well. The hardware
is ok, about the same as everyone elses, but it's not a brand I recommend.

Well Barry it is staring to look like you are a HP basher just because you
can, the list of drivers for a lot of operating systems for current laptops
looks very good indeed.
