Default Bios update makes fan race for no reason

Hi,

Strange thing: i updated the bios to my HP laptop. And it made the
fans go at full speed for no reason. How did this update get out the
door? This should of be caught by the programmers.

I flashed the older version and everything seems OK now. How does this
happen? Don't they know what they're doing?

For starters, I agree. And I see this all of the time. And when people
tell others to update all of their drivers to the latest and greatest
whether they have a problem or not, I cringe. As sometimes the latest
and greatest can be the biggest mistake you can make. This applies to
BIOS updates as well.

And unlike Windows and drivers and such, where you can just reformat to
get out of a terrible bind. As some BIOS and other flash updates, won't
let you downgrade to an earlier version. So count your lucky stars you
were able too.

Another thing about these updates. As I hear horror stories about the
ones that failed to update and then refuses to allow a redo. And worse,
it refuses to boot. We call these as being bricked. I never had one do
this to me yet. But I have worked on other machines that this has
happened. And it ain't pretty! 99% of them are finished!

Consider yourself lucky: goinb back to a previous bios version is even
more risky than updating with a new version.

And updating bios unless you have a very specific reason to do so is a
gamble where you don't stand to win a lot and where you stand to end up
with a door step.

Happened to me quite a while ago on the Twinhead laptop that was my
workhorse while we were trying to build a house. After updating the bios
to fix a clock problem IIRC, the situation was worse, so I thought
upgrading "backwards" would at least bring me back where I started.
Well, it got me back so well, the machine did not boot any more and
trying upgrade anew did not work.

I had to ship the machine at the other end of the world to get it fixed.
I had to borrow a machine (fortunaletely, the local people from the
library were very obliging) spend probably close to 200$ between freight
and repairs ... and be out of my own machine for over a month (I was
overseas at the time).

So, Bill, I fully agree. Never fix what is not broken; I have to admit,
I like to tinker, but some lessons, I never forgot!

It's likely that the later bios added some fan control code to the BIOS,
there is probably a [new] setting that isn't set, so the fan is running
flat out constantly.

I do know that some HP Compaq models have a BIOS fan control.
What is your specific model?

I did a BIOS upgrade on one of my EeePC 702, I forget why now. And the fan
will run at full speed and the CPU temperature will always read 32°F or 0°C
(trust me it is wrong). The fix is to remove the battery (if installed) and
remove the AC for a second and it is fine (and the CPU temp reads fine too)
for a few hours or so. Although I also use an utility to control the fan
speed, so that works as long as Windows is running so I can turn it down.

*** Correct; so does the HP Pavilion.

Gold: If you decide to re-flash, look to see if there is a fan control
option that will allow slower speeds.

Personally, I leave my laptop fans set to full speed. I prefer to have
maximum cooling as soon as the thermostat kicks in.
