Does anyone know if the Asus EEEPC 1000 (with 40GB solid state drive)
is available with Windows XP on it, or is this just the Linux model?
Does anyone know what the idea is behind this?

Asus may or may not this model with WinXP: our practical
problem is that most retailers do not want to carry all the
(dozen) different varieties of Eee.

Yes. (There is neither power nor room in the Eee
case for a hard drive.)

This was my point. I wasn't sure why this decision was made, to have
the XP version confined to the hard drive, and make the Linux version
effectively more.
Has anyone got one of these units and can shed any good stories about
them? I am quite tempted, but there are rumors they are going to make
another model in Sep/Oct?

In order to stay in business, M$ MUST sell you something.
Unfortunately, their only offering is uninteresting to the market.
So, they resorted to the tried and true strategy: coercion.
You WILL buy vista because we Won't sell you XP.
But the ultraportable PC market is growing and it runs LINUX...GASP!!!
The UPC can't run bloated Vista. M$ can't ignore this market segment.
They can't have large groups of users comfortable with linux. If that
happens, their whole business model (monopoly) is in jeopardy.
M$ can't sell you XP, 'cause you won't buy Vista...what to do???
The solution...make some changes to the license so that you can't put
XP on a system with a reasonably (large) sized hard drive. Change
the name to "lite" to make it fit into the Vista sales targets and
compensation scheme...and market share percentage figures.
M$ is making lemonade out of their own lemon.
Drink up...

I have the latest Asus EEEPC 1000 BK2 - 1.6Ghz Intel Atom, 1GB RAM,
40GB SSD, 6 cell battery which I got just over 1 week ago now.
It comes with the very latest XANDROS Linux O/S which is very good,
but along with the EEEPC came with a WindowsXP drivers CD and a
installation guide for XP on the EEEPC... To install XP you will
need a valid XP licence/software.
Thoroughly recommend this little laptop as this is my first eeepc and
compliments my 3 other high-spec laptops & tablet PC very nicely.

Congratulations! Say if you ever bump up the RAM let me know if Xandros sees
more than 1GB. Mine doesn't.
