Default Unbootable Mount

I am trying to repair my son's Gateway Laptop. M465 series. It is running xp pro. It seemed to be a good one though and is only 2 months old. He said he has no idea what happened to it to cause this issue. So here is the issue:
When you start up - you have the black screen asking you to start normally / safe mode etc.. When performing any of the senarios another screen comes up fast with the following: multi 0 disk [0 disk] partition [1] \windows\systems 32 drivers etc....It goes on and on. Then a blue screen comes up REAL fast and last only about 3 seconds. All I can read off of it is is UNBOOTABLE MOUNT. So what I did next was put in the re-install cd. All looks good for a couple minutes. Says its installing untill it reads - Examing disk 0 at 0 on bus 0 on iastor. I let it run a long time and still never made it past that. It just stopped.
What would be my next step? Can any one please help.
Thanks so very much
