Default Toshiba laptop Lid Shutdown

I recently have been given a Toshiba satellite laptop.so far,things I Don't like are:

- Windows shuts down when the lid is closed...A PIA if you want to have MS updates or a virus scan performed when I am not present.

- If the lid is left open, windows will shut down after a few minutes from inactivity, still not able to download updates.

-the shift key response is very slow, the reason for not having upper case when called for in this thread.

I have gone into control panel and tried to find settings to change to keep the lid from closing out Windows (xp),but I can't seem to find a way to do it on this unit...there seems to be a special 'Toshiba settings" in the control panel with fewer options than usual.

I see a little prong on the screen lid that makes contact with a switch that shuts down Windows, has anyone taken to removing or grinding this prong off?
Is there another way to prevent Windows from shutting down when the lid is closed?
