Unhappy T2984 - No power

I woke up yesterday morning to find my Emachines T2984 OFF! Pushing the start button yieded no results...not even a sputter. Closer inspection revealed that the 3 cooling fans are also dead. When the cord is disconnected/reconnected, I can hear an arc. I removed the side cover and spotted a green light on the motherboard which faded about 3 seconds after the power cord was disconnected and relit upon reconnecting the cord. I'm assuming that my power supply is shot, but being a novice thought it best to confirm with the good folks of HTFC first. If it is the PS, will I be better off replacing the cpu or getting a new PS? Is there a better brand PS to use as a replacement (I've heard Emachines PS's are weak even tho this 1 is over 3 years old)?? What brand should I be looking for? I have no other complaints with the unit as it fits my needs. Being unemployed, I'm not anxious to purchase a whole new cpu so if I can keep the repair.cost low that would be great Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Hi welcome to the group, good to have you.

Yes you are probably right about the power supply being the problem, could be other things too but we do need to confirm it's not the power supply first of all... we need to try and do thing's logical here.

Also keep an eye out for blown capacitors, 'caps' for short here's what they look like Bad caps on mobos just to give you a clue.... they are used in power supplies as well but we can't alway's see them because of the screened box.

Myself I would go for the power supply first of all or at least try a known good one... the fans by the way are operated from the 12V DC supply, if these aren't working then we can 'probably' cast evil eyes on the power supply... PSU (Power Supply Unit) they are also known as, looks like you got the right instincts there.
