The traces and pings above that look like problems actually aren't. MSN blocks ping and that is also why the tracert fails. Same with About.com.

Ok, we have what we might call a baseline now. Your latency is really high, but I have to assume that it is normal for you/your physical network (mine is about half as loing over a wireless connection).

I would consider switching back to the proper DNS configuration that your ISP gave you. Free DNS is, well, free. Free always sucks worse than paid-for. If you rerstore the ISP settings and the latency doesn't change much, then there's no difference between one DNS configuration over the other.

So now that we have a decent baseline, wait for your connection to fail. Perform the tests again. It would be good to see several tracerts during one of these spontaneous outages. That will tell us where the process is breaking down.

I would also like to suggest that you open an account at www.dslreports.com and check out their tools section. The speed tests can also tell you a lot about your connection, and there is a ping service that will track your connection for 24 hours. It can show you some of what we're looking for data-wise.

Have you ever used the router to release/renew the IP configuration when in an outage?
Did you say that the ISP does not allow you to log into the modem for diagnostics?
What is the make and model? (there may be login information on the web that will allow you to log in and manage the modem or monitor its status)

Thank you for the information. I have not been able to use the computer much this weekend but will get on what you asked me to do first thing Monday after lunch. As far as the DNS goes I did switch back to the original configuration the ISP gave me with one exception. DNS1/2 are from ISP and DNS3 is from OpenDNS. Should I remove the 3rd one or is that not really an issue as the latency issue provided was that this configuration.

Monday afternoon I will look at the tools at dslreports. I had an account many years ago but not sure if it is still available. The router has been reset a few times to test different configurations. Not sure if the resetting of the router will do the release/renew IP although it seems to bring up a thought. Before the IP address was static and had no problems possibly around the time they went to static IP addresses is when this started but not sure that would cause it or not.

The ISP has not told me whether I can log in to the modem or not, just never thought about asking. The modem is a PARADINE model # 6381-A3-200-AD8L2+/R Bridge/Router. The tech support at the ISP is really unfamilar with technology but at least they speak english so I could understand that they did not know what to do.

Will respong after getting results on Monday/Tuesday depending on the tools at dslreports. Thanks again.

I tried a few tests at that website and they all came up without any problems except for not being pingable. I checked the router and windows firewall and do not see where it would be stopping the ping back. I was going to try again today by starting a ping on my end redirecting ot a text file and just let it continue all day. Unfortunately last night we had a major power outage, not sure why as the skies were clear and there are no reports in the news although the whole neighborhood was out for almost 4 hours. Once power was restored I noticed a few things going wrong or acting strangely especially with my USB external drive (used for backups only). The message unrecognized USB device would come up with the tones then the tones for device being disconnected would follow and this would repeat continuelly. I opened the case and found that the USB connectors that were attached to the front of the case were hanging loose and possibly touching the board or other component. Once I reattached the USB connectors to the front of the case the messages went away (power was off when this was done of course).

Because both of these things seemed to happen at the same time I am not sure if either was the cause or not of my network problem or if something was done during the power outage to correct the DSL error but since this morning I have had no connection problems. The ping to a text file is still running just in case but as of now everything is running smoothly. What do you think, do you think that either one of those could have fixed my problem?
