First off I have an HP Mini 311 Netbook with Windows XP.
Well I was doing partitioning with LiveUSB GParted on the HDD so that I could dual boot my factory Windows XP with windows 7. I set it to allocate 17 GB for the new partition. It started to shrink the HDD to the left and then when the first step was done it returned an ERROR in Gparted. Heres the error:

Corrupt partition table or incorrect device partitoning?
Unable to read the contents of this file system!
Because of this some operations may be unavailable.
So I restarted and now XP wont start. After the HP logo theres just a blinking cursor.
this what happend in my laptop recently , i formated the C: partition and it reversed like this :
D: volume NTFS
C: presrio FAT 32
mean while , the first one is D: , i called a reapiring shop and they told me , windows boot only from C: and non anothe partition !! and i tht is it ,,
so , u must allocate windows in the C: rather than another partition
(i canno garrenty you on what i have said , but it worked on me )
...the same can happen to a slave drive, if the drive letter get's changed, the slave drive with all your jpegs or whatever will disappear into thin air, all you do in this case is to enter Control panel, Performance and maintenance then into Admin Tools and click open Disk Management, there you will be able to get the drive and it's contents back.... providing of course you know the drive's letter.
This usually happens when you start swapping hard drives around for some reason or other - one way to hide hard drives.
