Never took one of these apart, but there would be two possibilities, easy and
hard. The easy one would be if the drive was held in place by a retaining screw
on the bottom of the chassis. The hard one would be partial disassembly per the
service manual. You may be able to find a service manual somewhere on the web,
but not usually on the HP web site, which hides service manuals from view of the
unwashed public (unlike Dell and IBM/Lenovo)... Ben Myers

I replace the HD a while ago and it was fairly simple. I was hoping this
would be simple also, however I did remove any screws on the bottom that
could possibly hold the optical drive in place and no luck. I contacted hp
for a service manual and again no luck. They suggested that I take it to a
service center. Probably why hp was at the bottom of consumer reports
customer service list in the June '08 issue.
