Default HP CLJ 2600 vs. 2605

Hi, HP put the Color LaserJet 2605dn on sale a couple of weeks ago for
$250. The price of the new printer is about $75 less than the price of the
four toner cartridges. I picked one up at OfficeMax and am very happy with
it. I would rate it nine out of 10 taking off one point for not having a
backlight in the readout.

I see the Color LaserJet 2600n selling for $300 to $375 and am curious as to
the reason HP is pushing the 2605 into the market. Is there something wrong
with the 2605? Comparing the two http://tinyurl.com/2wwser there's just no
reason I can see to spend more money for the 2600. Especially because the
2600 has host based drivers and no auto duplex.

I am thinking about going down to OfficeMax and getting another 2605 and
take the toner cartridges out and selling the printer on eBay for $25 + S&H.

Comments... Dean

Before you do that, make sure the bundled "starter" toner
cartridges are the same capacity as the normal retail ones
you used in your pricing deconstruction. I know little about
current CLJs, but historically, reduced-capacity bundled
consumables have been common.

Those extra cartridges stripped from the extra new printer
might cost more per ounce than you're assuming.

The toner cartridges for both come only in one capacity. The black Q6000A
is 2,500 pages and the color Q6001A, 2A, 3A are 2,000 pages. There are no
"maintenance" cartridges.

I had almost decided to buy the HP Color LaserJet 3600dn and was waiting for
my pile of money to grow when the 2605's price was reduced. The 3600 is
faster, quieter and the toner cartridges are twice the capacity as the 2605.
I hesitated on the 3600 because of the host based driver... Dean

A glance at the hp web pages on these reveals:

* The CLJ2600 "what's in the box" identifies the toner
carts by Quick-Ship SKUs. Presumably, they are the
full retail carts bearing those same Q numbers.

* The CLJ2605 WitB just says
"HP color LaserJet print cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow)"

It could easily be the case that the 2605 has reduced-
capacity starter carts. Or not ...

This may not be an eBay unbundling windfall.

Your link shows a 2605dn priced @ $375 but out of stock. Speed is
greater, black resolution is greater, duplex is automatic, memory is
4x greater than 2600, processor is faster (stands to reason,
considering ppm). For home use, the 2600 would be fine for me, but
they're not a direct comparison.

One intriguing difference in terminology: "single-sheet multipurpose
tray" (2600) vs "single-sheet priority feed slot" (2605). What does
that mean?

The link I posted is a bit confusing because HP *had the 2605dn listed at
$250 until it went out of stock. Then the price went back up to $375.
OfficeMax, for instance, has featured in this weeks flyer the 2605dn for
$249 and the 2600n for $300.

I don't know how the 2600 single sheet slot works but the with 2605 as long
as there's paper in slot 1 (the single sheet slot), the printer will draw
from that first... Dean

I've just never heard them described as a 'slot'. Is it different from
the usual fold-out tray?

Yes. The slot is somewhat like the secondary slot on a LaserJet L5, L6 and
1100 only horizontal rather than vertical. There is a sliding guide that is
adjusted to center the paper and only one sheet at a time can be fed.

The single sheet slot was on my list as a disadvantage of the 2605 because
it won't handle more than one sheet at a time. The 3600 has a fold out tray
that can be loaded with up to 100 sheets. After using the single sheet slot
I find that it is adequate for my needs. It will even print on wallet check
size paper... Dean

Dean-

Normally selling for $500, the HP 2605dn was on sale for $250 at a
couple of the office supply stores. However that was only for the
"President's Day" week. Such a deep discount can only mean one thing -
the printer has been discontinued.

Last Thursday (Feb 28) I went to an Office Depot and asked the manager
if he knew whether the 2605dn was in fact discontinued. He did some
checking and found that it was true. He sold me their display model for
the $250 price.

This particular store did not have power available at the shelf where
the printer had been located. According to the printer's Supplies
Status page, the cartridges are at 86 percent capacity.

You may find a new one and can get it at the $250 price if you ask. If
you should find a display model on sale, be sure to check the supplies
status page that can be printed from the control panel. If you have to
buy a new set of cartridges, it may not be such a good deal!
