Default hp 32S RPN Scientific: Memory lost after battery change?

When the batteries on my beloved old hp 32S RPN Scientific calculator
seemed to have run down to the edge of failure, I took them out and left
it without batteries installed for 2 or 3 weeks while I got new ones.

[<http://www.batterybob.com/> was a great online source, by the way.]

When I installed the new ones and started it up, the opening screen
said, "Memory Empty!" (or something similar). Since then a few of the
keypad inputs are accepted (numbers, Enter key, etc), most of the others
just don't work (+, *, times keys, Roll, functions, etc.)

Is there a way to restore the brain in this deserving antique? A
"reset" button or sequence? (My original users manual is long gone.)

Thanks for any info; email cc of replies appreciated.

Try the 4x series equivalent of [ON] + [C]. I think on the 32S it's [C] +
[LN].

Since you saw "Memory Clear" (or whatever), the equivalent of [ON] + [A] +
[F] probably isn't going to help, but maybe it wouldn't hurt to try. On the
32 it's [C] + [ sqrtX] + [SigmaX] or similar.

There's also a self-test, but I don't recall how to initiate it.

HP32S and HP32SII:

To reset Press and hold the 'C' key and press LN key. The book says it
may be necessary to do this several times.

Also a memory clear that does more than 'Clear All'
Press and hold the 'C' key,
Press and hold the <root>x key
Press the <sigma> + key

After releasing you should see the message memory clear.

Mine is an HP32SII, but the hardware's probably about the same. You
can do a reset by holding down the ON, A and F keys at the same time.
When you release them, it should say that the memory is clear.
