I have been running my P4 XP (SP3) PC for years without a problem. On
Saturday I installed some scenery for my Flight Simulator X and after than
FSX wouldn't run. I uninstalled the software (Ultimate terrain Europe X)
and still my FSX wouldn't run. I uninstalled FSX and decided to defrag my
drive with disk keeper because my PC was running a little slow and since
then it has ground to a halt!
It loads to the login window as normal but after that when I select my icon
it takes about 5 mins to load my desktop and icons. Anything I open after
that takes ages to load, but the funny thing is once I have opened it, say
IE for example, I can open it again and it loads quickly, almost as if once
it is cached it is ok.
I let XP run Check Disk, have run my Avast Virus Scan, Spybot, CCcleaner,
Regedit and Registry Mechanic but it is still the same. I have run Msconfig
and checked services running and my startup list but cannot see anything
unusual. I have also done a system restore from a week ago when everything
was fine but still very slow to load to the desktop.
Can anyone tell me where I can look to try and find what could be causing
this?

Go to the device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controller, Properties, Advanced
Settings, and check that you hard disk is run in PIO (bad) or DMA (good)
mode.
The slowness is not surprising. After a new install of xp, from the time
the desktop showed to the time that all the icons were up and xp is ready
to be used took about 5 seconds.
I installed some business apps like oracle, etc. and that time shot up to 50
seconds.
Later, I uninstalled all of that but the time remained at 50 seconds.
Back when tech tv was worth watching, the recommended a re-install of xp
every 6 months.

Just to add guys, I was playing around in Computer Management and used XP's
defrag to analyse my HD and it said it needed to be defragmenter, this
surprised me as I had only did it a couple of days ago with Disk Keeper. So
I decided to run XP defragmenter but after 13% it finished. I tried again
and it stopped after 13% again, saying some files could not be defragmented,
what does this mean? Could this be a sign my HD is failing? Is there a
better defragmenter I can try?

A lot of hard drive activity?
Check your swap file.

Try CHKDSK /F
I forget exactly how that works in Windows, because it can't fix the
disk when Windows is running. I think it sets up to run during the next
reboot.
It sounds like you may have a corrupted hard drive. CHKDSK will either
fix it, or it will be reformat time.
