They did. PCLinuxOS uses a totally graphical menu. Easy to see what you
are doing. Here is a source for many screenshots which includes some for
installation. Being color coded allows you considerable flexibility.

But that is getting ahead of the point. First make a Live-CD and see for
yourself what is offered. Hopefully your current installation will allow
you to burn iso's.

As for music check out Audacity. This is a multi-platform application
you can first evaluate now using XP.

Finally a great article from CNET regarding Live-CD's posted this month.

I haven't found anything close to Cakewalk and Nuendo for music production
that will run in Linux. When you have a couple thousand bucks worth of music
production software it is hard to just toss it.....:-). My wife and I both
write and I play several instruments and also do vocals ........... (well,
after editing it is almost vocals.....:-). If they are out there, I haven't
seen them. I use a lot of older sound equipment, most of it is probably 20
or more years old (old Peavey PA and a 16ch sound board) and have it all
working fine with XP/Cakewalk SPE/Nuendo. I couldn't get Nuendo to work well
in Vista, although if I wanted to spend another $1,700-$1,800 I could get a
version that would......:-). I might do a total of 12-16 individual tracks
with vocals and instruments and double that after post-pro/editing, so there
is really nothing that Linux has to offer there. I have messed around with
Linux for a long time off and on. I am not a whiz by any means, but can get
around it fairly well. It just doesn't do some things that I really want to
do.

The secret is to use disk management in Windows to create unpartitioned
space which the Linux installer will see. A space of 15-20GB should be
plenty. This lessens the chance of messing up with unfamiliar tools.

The Ubuntu and Kubuntu installer is very similar as both are based on
Debian.

Thanks again, Jim.

I "think" I have downloaded the iso file you recommended (it was downloading
when I went to bed earlier and I just woke up). At DSL speeds it took a
little over an hour, or so I'm told by the wife.

I have been using Audacity for five or more years now in Windows. It is a
great editing program for single files, whether single instruments or a
compiled sound track, but it ain't Sonar, if you know what I mean?

Still, I know that there are other music production software programs
available. It is unlikely that no one has one that works with Linux. I could
never get Rose Garden up and running. It looked as though it would be
capable of serving my modest needs. Maybe now I will have better luck with
it.

Will report back, hopefully, with some results.

You make an interesting point. Linux cannot allocate disk space if no unused
disk space is visible. Thanks.

Heh? From the Live-CD you can resize and/or repartition the existing
hard drive. All done in full graphical mode.

I've used this many times without any problems at all. But whether it be
Windows or any other operating system follow the guide lines exactly
starting with making a backup of your data. These utilities are powerful
and not forgiving of user mistakes.

Is this the sort of application you're looking for?

http://ardour.org/

That and Rose Garden both available for your testing from the Live-CD.
As mentioned before you will will need to reload the package manager
first in order to find them. You may "install" them while still in Live-
CD mode but remember that is only a temporary status. Once you shut down
the system will be as it was beforehand.

You and I are having the same communication problems that I have with Linux
in general. I do not know their language and assumptions that go along with
it. They tell me to do something in terms that I have never heard used in
context before, so I end up not knowing what to do. You probably don't
understand, do you? I suppose I don't have the Linux gene. 8>)

I am uncertain as to whether you are referring to Linux itself or the
application Ardour.

If Linux are you unsure how to create the Live-CD?

I have made Live CD's from iso files in the past, Jim, but that was many
years ago. I don't even know where to start today. As said before, I'm
probably a lost cause. Gotta bad case of "brick brain" (hardening of the
arteries) and my memory isn't for beans these days.

Sorry to waste your time.
