Wow. Does your operating system have a name? Why not just use your
operating system?

Please start using Linux immediately. And, like Ed, let us know how
it goes from time to time.

As a "software developer", you should have known that applications
are what matter. What was your reason to use Vista in the first
place?

I appreciate your renegade spirit, but you can't get there from
here.

They were all bespoke applications for single clients and no use to
anyone else. If you want more details then they were real-time test
systems for the avionics industry.

They weren't given names and were written for specific tasks. The
client always bought the full rights to the code so I couldn't re-use
it.

It was a decision forced upon us by the management. I had already
told them that Vista was not suitable.

------------

In the Seventies, folks were ticked at how GM and Ford responded to the EPA
rules and restrictions, but the Big Three continued to bring out the same
old thing with patches that were troublesome and barely worked. Along came
the Japanese and now the Big Three aren't. A couple of them may actually go
out of business. Why? Because they thought that they were so large and
powerful that they could force us to keep consuming their seventies
automotive garbage. Instead, many changed to Japanese produced cars and
trucks. Their empire has been vanquished and now they are growing too weak
economically to fund the R&D necessary to stay in business.

I see Microsoft doing the same thing. They think that we MUST use their OS
in order to run our programs. They haven't taken the seventies automotive
lesson to heart. I doubt that they have any idea just how much a large
portion of computer users hate being trapped into using ever more limited MS
products at outlandish prices. Is this just so much rhetoric? Yes, but so
was the Declaration of Independance, the U.S. Constitution, etc.

The only constant in life is change. This means that no one can expect their
luck to continue favorably forever, but one can do things that can extend
their run considerably - sometimes.

It is time that Wal-Mart began selling internet PC computers for $75 to $100
that includes a proprietary operating system in ROM. Wanna hard drive? Buy a
USB flash drive to store stuff on. No new drivers to worry about, no
security software since everything is in ROM with no possible way to change
it, add to it, or delete it. No personal invasion/data mining. Those folks
will have to find real jobs.

The net will adapt if enough folks buy the new devices and I'm sure they
will when the opportunity presents itself. We're almost there as it is.
Let's dump MS when the opportunity presents itself and lets encourage folks
to make such devices.

Wanna play games? Buy a game box. Computers suck at game playing anyway.

I'm looking at it from a cost/benefit perspective. I'm not on a Mission From
God, or seeking the Holy Grail of game playing. I'm looking at it from a
person's perspective that enjoys many hobbies, is still somewhat ambulatory
and who still interfaces with people, when unavoidable. <G>

However, with all of that said, you certainly have the right to disagree.
I'll help you fight to defend that right, if need be.

I guess it does come down to how you look at it. From a cost persepctive, it
is cheaper to buy a dedicated game box instead of having to upgrade a pc to
play the latest game. It seems to me that the advances in hardware are
outpacing the software requirements for these games except for couple of
crazy games that are intensive. My old 7900GS still plays everything I want
it to. Also a console is easy for the technically challenged who just need
to plug it in and can go.
For me, I prefer PC gaming. The PC could do more in gaming in years past
that consoles never could. That gap is closing now that the consoles have
internet connectivity, but I still feel that PC's are more powerful and have
better graphics, and storage for gaming than consoles. The problem nowadays,
is consoles have become more and more mainstream, and the developers seem to
want to ignore the PC enthusiast and concentrate on games for consoles first
and PC second.
I'll stick with my PC for gaming. Maybe I'll change my mind in the
future, but I guess what It really comes down to is what you prefer.
