Experiment a little. Download for yourself PCLinuxOS 2007, burn the Live-
CD, and give it a whirl.

Unlike many other Linux distributions this one is very easy to install
and navigate within. Many new users say it is the one "most like XP" as
far as user friendliness goes.

But in the beginning just try it as a Live-CD.

Well worth your time.

Doesn't matter for current games.

Whether future games will require DirectX 10 depends on how many
Windows XP (DirectX 10) users there are in the market.

Sooner or later, there will be little pain and significant benefit
moving to Vista. It's just a matter of time.

By the way. There is a workaround for Windows XP authentication, for
legitimate users who don't like asking Microsoft for permission to
reinstall their operating system. It's bound to be the same for
Vista eventually. Microsoft can't write something that highly
skilled techies can't fix, it just isn't possible.

Well, I guess the truth is out. I'm not a highly skilled Techie. But I'm
still good with radios. <G>

Care to give us a hint as to how to do it? TIA

I've been there before, John. I am getting very disgusted with MS and their
pranks.

How long will it be until we have to renew our license for the OS on an
annual basis? The handwriting is on the wall. I don't need them, nor their
OS that bad.

I've also been using Microsoft products since the beginning. I was
not happy with DOS, having used better OSs before it.

DOS was a real pain for me, as a software developer, because it could
not do much. I usually had to write my own OS in order to do my job,
since the customer wanted "DOS". Even up to Windows 98 things were
still bad. The development machines still needed rebooting regularly.

When windows NT came along things improved. But, with XP, the rot
started again with more bloat and very little useful added. Vista is
100 times worse.

I'm going to give Linux a serious look as soon as I have the time.
Apart from Microsoft Money, there are serious contenders for most
applications I use. If Microsoft drop Money for the UK as they appear
to be doing then I'll have no reason to keep Windows.

Agreed. Where I work we had to "upgrade" to Vista. A lot of us wasted
about a week trying to get it to work properly. None of the software
I use on a regular basis worked at all so I went back to XP.

Dropping isn't the only scenario. Few years back I was still using
Quicken from time to time. Then one morning I discovered the application
was severely crippled. Turns out that Intuit has a sunset policy and
mine had reached that date. Simply said it was their way of saying
upgrade or tough luck.

As with my recommendation to Ed start by downloading a copy of PCLinuxOS
2007. Burn and load the Live-CD.

While in live mode go to the package manager and first reload to get a
complete set of updates and the full listing of available software. Next
download Kmymoney2. Check it out. I've been using it ever since and have
never looked back. Yes, you can download and "install" software while
still in live disc mode. Just note that none of it will be saved when
you shut down.

Here's a link so you can check it out beforehand:
http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/index-home.html

That might be true, depending on the applications you use. For the
vast majority of users, too many applications require Windows.
