I don't know where you get that "short warranty" from.. the Samsungs all
come with a three year warranty!

Your singular experience doesn't discount the user feedback on
Newegg.

So you aren't aware of the fact that magazines get paid for
advertising.

I got it from the user reviews on Newegg.

> the Samsungs all come with a three year warranty!

Maybe you're talking about the retail version!!!

From the user reviews on Newegg experiencing frequent DOAs with
Samsung F1 hard drives.

"There is no warranty"

"No warranty - per Samsung"

"I called the warranty department today and this drive only has a 1
year warranty"

"Samsung's warranty replaces a faulty drive with a refurb"

"Warranty replacement gives you a refurb"

"BEWARE OF WARRANTY TERMS"

"Samsung won't make good with absolutely no company warranty, so I'm
out several hundred dollars"

Whoa...

Why are you all fighting over half a second difference on something that
takes 30 odd seconds to load?
For me the answer would be simple. I have no use for a 150gb drive, no
matter how fast it is, and I sure as hell aren't going to (a) sit there with
a stopwatch measuring it or (b) going to pay that sort of money for it.

It's all about the law of dminishing returns, and you must be at the extreme
end of it with those prices.

If your mobo has got a raid controller on board, then get a pair of cheaper
drives, otherwise just get a good reasonably priced drive and back your data
up regularly. The Samsung that Rarius is mentioning has a 3 year warranty,
so you will not lose out by getting one (other than data of course).

DaSilvor

PS sorry John Doe, I didn't realise I sent this to you personally earlier.

The difference loading stuff with a Raptor is in fact a lot greater
than that.

Nobody needs to know that. Hard drive size is explicitly stated and
universally understood.

That sounds like a personal problem.

Maybe not, but I bet you do weirder stuff than that.

Okey-dokey. So how's the weather?

Actually, that depends on how fast it is and how much you use a
computer during the day. You're mistaken if you think that an
individual result is all you get out of it.

First Post - Not nym-shifting. You picking up on the email address? well
spotted. Still not nym-shifting, though.

Ok. I'll bite. What's the difference?

Yup, and 150gb is small by todays standards. Some people I know will fill
that much space in a few weeks.

Not for me.

Not bad, ta. How is it where you are?

I use one every day. Build my own as well; have done for the last 17 years.

I'm thinking we are talking cross purposes here.
John, Given you used $'s below, you are in the US?
Matt you used £'s in your message, so you are in the UK?

The US and the UK obviously have different laws about warrantee.

First off in the UK when you buy something you have a statutory 12 month warranty. Also your contract is with the retailer not the manufacturer; so if it goes wrong in the first 12 months the retailer is responsible for sorting it out. They may decide to send it to the manufacturer, but they must still provide you with a 'fit for purpose' product. They cannot get out of this, regardless of what they tell you. They can have the unit repaired or they can replace it with a new unit, it's their choice. After the statutory period, you are in the hands of the manufacturer, but they advertise a full 36 month warrantee, so they have to honour it.
It's either that or the trading standards and the like will get involved and the publicity alone is not woth the hassle of replacing the hardrive.

Matt, if you are concerned with the warrantee then contact trading standards, they will give you the official position on warrantee and the like.

I will repeat my original assessment, that I would not buy a 150gb harddrive for £115, no matter how fast it is. I haven't checked your motherboard details so I can't confirm Rarius's comment on the raid controller, but if it doesn't have one, just get a good harddrive at a reasonable price. If you are loading lots of data on a one off basis, then the speed of the drive will make a difference, all be it a small one. If you are reloading the same data then you may be better off with more ram (You haven't said what spec your machine is, so I'm guessing that you are not fully loaded with ram).

I'm not familiar with Newegg, John. What is it, please? I guess it's a forum of some kind, but I know no details.

So why would CustomPC publish such a bad review of the Raptor then? Surely
WD spend on advertising just as much as Samsung do! For your information
neither Samsung nor WD have advertised in Custom PC in the last three
months.

Hmm.. I just went to the NewEgg main Harddrives page... Its WD this and WD
that... I wonder what "special deal" NewEgg got from WD!

Lets take the magazines and retailers out of the equasion and ask
TomsHardware...

WinXP startup (MB/s)
WD Raptor 150GB 10.1
Samsung F1 1TB 10.0

Average Read Transfer h2benchw 3.6 (MB/s)
WD Raptor 150GB 75.3
Samsung F1 1TB 91

Workstation 1/o benchmark IOMeter 2003.05.10 (operations/s)
WD Raptor 150GB 1129
Samsung F1 1TB 720

My reading of these and other benchmarks is that the Raptor is quicker to
start operations, but the Spinpoint maintains a higher sustained transfer
rate...

The Price/Performance Index benchmark is interesting though...
WD Raptor 150GB 1341
Samsung F1 1TB 1383

So there is very little in it until you remember that the Spinpoint is over
6x larger!

BTW More confirmation that Samsung provide a three year warranty...
http://techreport.com/articles.x/14200 and I quote "Samsung's warranty
coverage for the F1, which lasts for three years" Interesting benchmarks
there too... very little difference!

My point remains... considering the performance is so comparable... why
spend £145 for 150GB when you can spend £89 for a whole Terabyte?

Rarius

What other version would I be talking about? If you buy the OEM version you
expect a different warranty because it is intended for OEMs who provide a
warranty themselves!

BTW I used to be an engineer for an OEM so I know of what I speak.

You are narrowminded.

Especially if you download lots of **** and other multimedia. I'm a
gamer. I could have backup copies of Windows, and installed Flight
Simulator, Supreme Commander, and all of my other games on my 150 GB
Raptor with space left over.

You're not enlightening anybody, DaSilvor. And hopefully you're not
suggesting that no one can use a 150 GB hard drive. I used a 37 GB
Raptor until about six months ago. Raptors rock.

Because, of course, hard drive speed is in fact a major limiting
factor of a computer.
