Do you suffer from migraines, live in a soundproof room, and wear an
earpiece that boosts the sound around you 10 times or more?

Get real.

You are among real people who actually own Raptors. Instead of
promoting silliness, why don't you just ask?

I own the 150, it doesn't make noise.

That sounds like either a milling machine or the old slow-dying Quantum
drive in my wurk puter 5 years ago.

JR........I have found a direct correlation between <1>the amount of time
from your last backup and <2>the time for a failure of a RAID 0 array. The
longer <1> is, the shorter <2> is..............:-)

Widen your horizons... There are more drive manufacturers than just WD...

Micro Mart this week did a round up of four 1Tb drives
WD Green Power 1Tb... £128... 6/10
Samsung HD103UJ F1 Spinpoint... £93... 9/10
Maxtor DiamondMax 22... £97... 8/10
Hitachi DeskStar 7K1000... £102... 8/10

The Samsung F1 Spinpoint drives (500Gb and 1Tb) are the current leaders in
almost every review I have seen in the last few months... You can have a 1Tb
Spinpoint for under £100 and its just as fast as a Raptor, especially with
32Mb of cache!

As for RAID... According to the GigaByte website, your mobo doesn't have
onboard RAIOD controller... unless you want to spend as much on a hardware
RAID card as you do on the drives themselves, forget it. You won't see any
noticable speed improvement.

My advice: Buy a 1Tb Spinpoint and have done with it!

Load times are the most noticeable hard drive performance index.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/14200/5

Yours is near the bottom of the list in every test.

The Raptors are near the top.

Hmm... Me thinks you misrepresent the data.

Doom load time...
Raptor WD 35.66
Raptor X 36.03
Spinpoint F1 36.22

Far Cry load time...
Raptor WD 33.59
Raptor X 35.40
Spinpoint F1 35.84

Yes... the Raptors are slightly faster (1% - 5%)... You just won't notice
that! The Spinpoint is over 8x more storage!!!!

You left out the worst results.

You get what you pay for. The Samsung F1 Spinpoint hard drives are
frequently DOA (mentioned 26 times in the first 100 reviews) and carry
an unspecified or short warranty.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152102

Excellent 59 reviews 56%
Good 10 reviews 9%
Average 7 reviews 6%
Poor 11 reviews 10%
Very poor 21 reviews 19%

Western Digital Raptor.

Excellent 398 reviews 77%
Good 72 reviews 14%
Average 27 reviews 5%
Poor 7 reviews 1%
Very poor 15 reviews 3%

I have had IBM/Hitachi, WD and Maxtor all DOA in the past... I never had a
Samsung DOA... don't doubt your figures, but every brand has bad batches,
just I personally have never had a bad Samsung. We use dozens of them at
work, all with no problem.

I have looked back through recent editions of PCFormat, MicroMart and
CustomPC magazines and all of them recommend the Samsung over anything else
at the moment.

Custom PC May 2008
The Spinpoint F1 is in the top 3 on almost every test, beating the
Raptors in every loadtime test. To quote... "Not surprisingly, this gave
the fastest sustained read speed of 96MB/s."

Custom PC Aug 2008
"The 1TB Samsung F1is equally as fast [as the VelociRaptor], costs half
the price and stores three times as much data"... Note the VelociRaptor is
faster than the RaptorX too!
"That said, in everyday use - image editing and loading games - the
VelociRaptor is no faster than the Samsung"

I never said that the WD Raptors were rubbish.. I only offered the Samsung
as an alternative worth looking at.
