Default Vista Machines .. XP voids warranty

Not only that, but there are no mobo drivers, etc
for XP on these machines, so you can't roll back.
At least ... I need XP chipset drivers for Compaq
Presario model SR2172NX. I found USB drivers
for it at HP by running their printer diagnostic
on line. Called Compaq tech support, and they
told me about XP not supported and voiding
warranty. Not that I blame them, but right now
Vista is a PIA in the workplace. Heck with the
warranty. Customer needs to be able to do her
job.

Why did you ask for machines with Windows Vista?

It would appear from at least my attempt to look for drivers for your
machine that only VISTA is available.

If I had no option to return these models for something that would run XP I
would at least see if I could try installing XP first. Of all the
propriatory computers I've had to work on I've had the most frustrations
with Compaq.

I did not. She outranks me, and "knows more than
I do" :-)

I'm trying what you say. I can't find drivers anywhere either.
I figure somebody out here has got a hack. This thing
is going in our database too ... and not compatible with
the security settings. Ho ho ho ! :-)

Can you trace it down, based on the chipset on the motherboard ?
Get all the particulars, and "search by analogy". Find another
brand that used the same chipset, and does have drivers.

Ditto that, although I shudder at some Packard Bell memories.

Yes, that's the way to do it. I just went through the same procedure
for a HP/Compaq customer who rolled back his SR5060AN/Vista machine to
XP.

In the OP's case, the motherboard is an ECS RC415ST-HM (Compaq
Alhena5-GL6) with an "ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 [chipset] for Intel
Processors":
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...dlc=en&lang=en

These appear to be the XP Pro/Home drivers:
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/x...grated-xp.html

Catalyst™ 7.6 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition
- Motherboard/IGP Drivers (Catalyst Software Suite, 43.2MB):
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206..._enu_48640.exe

My reading of the release notes suggests that the same driver package
applies to both Vista and XP:
