Default Video Card and Memory Problems

I have 2 problems or questions I have a home built by my SO the mobo
is a gigabyte and requires PCI-Express for a video card.
First, my 6600 died so i am looking for a new one to purchase. I don't
need much i am going to be doing some picture editing and I also play
WOW and somethings first person shooters(battlefield 1942) at lan
parties

Second I only have 1g i want to upgrade my memory (mobo requires
paired memory 4-slots) thought about getting 4 1gigs there is
currently 2 512mb=1Gig. I would like to know if I should just get
another pair of 512's and then have 2gig on the computer or replace
the 512 with the gigs.

I am looking to purchase both memory and card asap so any help is
wanted and appreciated. If you can give sites for comparison that
would be great too

Thanks,

TL

You could get two 1 gig sticks for a total of 3 gigs. Pair them by size
in DIMM 1 and 2 and they should run fine. When you install Vista (if you
haven't already, make sure you install with 1 GB in the computer, then
install patch KB929777 before adding the additional memory.

For Vista, if you want Direct X 10 graphics, you'll have to get a
GeForce 8 series card ( I don't know the ATI equivalent ). My experience
was that the leap from my 6800 to the 8800 (BFG 88640 GTS OC) was
impressive- even running Direct X 9 games, the 8800 has a much nicer
presentation. I ran BIOSHOCK at 1600 X 1200, everything enabled, and am
now playing Half Life 2 Orange Box at the same resolution, 8 X
antialising and 16X anisotropic filtering. Very smooth, impressive
graphics. There are lots of articles comparing the 8 series cards with
previous versions you may want to look into. For price comparison, look
at Mwave or Newegg - they usually have a good selection and often some
good specials. Having said that, a 6 of 7 series card will work fine in
Vista, you just won't get to take advantage of the Direct X 10 capability.

Good luck,

Fitz
