Upgraded CPU to X2 - doesn't show in control panel

Hi,
I replaced the processor in one of my desktop PCs with an Athlon 3800x2.
In control panel (xp pro) it shows as the correct processor, but
clicking on processors and also in performance monitor only shows a
single CPU.
I downloaded the amd drivers and tried them, I've also done a repair
install of XP with no success.
Anyone got any ideas ?

Go to Device Manager. Examine the "Computer" entry. Click the (+)
and it will probably say "ACPI Uniprocessor PC". That is the HAL or
hardware abstraction layer. Right click and do properties on it.
Click "Driver". Do an "Update Driver". On my computer, "Display
a list of known drivers" gives ACPI Multiprocessor PC as an option.
That is the kind of thing you want to use.

Not every HAL transition works this easily. Changing between ACPI
Uniprocessor PC and ACPI Multiprocessor PC isn't too traumatic,
as they both support ACPI. Some of the other options, like
"Standard PC" would really mess things up.

Thanks Paul,
I'd already tried this with no luck. I'll dig out another hard disk
later and do an install from scratch just to make sure it actually works
then.

So your "Computer" entry is already "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" ?

The ACPI is fundamental stuff. At least on prior versions of Windows
it cannot even be uninstalled. I would definitely try a full
reinstallation (really helps to have a disk manager for that sort of
thing, or another hard drive like you have). I bet it is set up during
(full) installation.

I recently did the same upgrade myself and although the CPU showed up
properly as a dual core I had minor stability issues with it so I ended up
backing up all my files to do a full format and reinstall. Everything's
sweet now - installed the CPU driver and the Dual Core Optimizer.

Same here, did a full install when I moved from an AMD 3200 to an AMD 4800
X2.

You did not say which motherboard you are using. That may be the problem if
it is not dual core compatible.

Hi is't a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 which I think is compatible.
