Default rma hard drive

What would you all suggest I do before returning a hard drive for
rma.Format good enough?Write zero's?
The drive seems to be working but I'm getting disk errors in event viewer
and the diagnostics is giving me mixed messages. One says return the drive
the next says errors repaired.WTF?
