Default Recos for socket 775 cpu coolers?

With all of the intelligent folk around here having done research about
which cpu coolers work best, I would appreciate recommendations. I am
designing a system around a Q6600 Core2 quad.

Thanks

If you're not overclocking, the stock cooler in the retail box works fine.

As J.R. said, the stock cooler is adequate if not overclocking.
If you want better, look here:

I can only speak from personal experience. I use have an Arctic Cooling
Freezer 7 Pro and I overclock my Q6600 to 3.25GHz. My core temps range from
34C on idle to 55C on full load.

Thanks for the link Bill, very useful.. especially if you follow some of the
links. FrostyTech has a very nicely set out table of loads of coolers with
their thermal and acoustic performance. Now all I need is to find a supplier
in the UK!

Thanks. I will look at the Arctic Cooling Freezer.

(OT: You bring up the point about overclocking. I have never run a
processor at anything except stock speeds, in this case 2.4 GHz.
Assuming my ASUS P5W WS board would allow it, after I get the system up
and running, what would I do to the processor and memory in the BIOS to
overclock? Is there a beginner's guide to overclocking the Q6600 chip?)

I found overclocking the Q6600 a peice of cake... I have an aBit IP35Pro
mobo, so your experience may vary.

First I locked the PCI and PCIe bus clock speeds to (33MHz and 100MHz
respectively). By default some mobos lock these bus speeds as multipliers of
the FSB so they get overclocked with it. Cards get a bit unhappy if you
overclock these busses so its best to lock them down.

Secondly I downgraded my memory multiplier. The meory bus IS locked to the
FSB by a multiplier, so it will get overclocked too. The memory speed will
effect overall performance much less than the CPU speed, so slow the memory
down for now. We will increase it again later.

My aBit mobo came with a windows BIOS editing program. I increased my FSB
from 266MHz to 360MHz in steps of about 10MHz. After I got to 3GHz I
started running burnin tests each step. I stopped at 3.25GHz as my core
temps started to rise at this speed. This didn't take too long as I was
doing all this in WinXP and didn't need to reboot once.

A FSB of 360MHz gives a core speed of 3.24GHz.

Once I was happy with this, I had to reboot back into BIOS to bring the DDR2
multiplier back up to bing the DDR2 speed back up to approximately its stock
speed.

As I said before, my Q6600 now runs at 35C on idle with the CPU fan on 30%.
On full load it rises to about 55C with the CPU fan on 100%. I use the aBit
uGuru to control my CPU fan. The fan only speeds up when I am doing heavy
work like rendering etc.

I am looking at upgrading my Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro to a Sunbeam
Core-Contact, but as I am in the UK I cant find a supplier over hear. In
fact I cant find any Core-Contact style coolers over here at all. We seem
to lag behind the US for things like this by almost 6 months!

Asus's advice for their P5E3 Deluxe board is, for active cooling, to
use a heat sink with radial fins, which the standard Intel retail
coreduo has. The Arctic cooler I bought has parallel fins, so I
thought it best not to use it. I don't over clock.

I would take a such advice with a large pinch of salt. The advice was
probably written before heatpipe coolers came on the market!

The AC Freezer 7 pro is a good cooler.. there are now better, quieter
coolers on the market, such as the SunbeamTech Core-Contact, but I don't
have personal experience of them. If anyone can tell me where I can get one
in the UK or a US supplier who will ship to UK at a reasonable cost, please
let me know!

The AC Freezer 7 Pro will keep your Q6600 nice and cool and its nice and
cheap too.
