Default Next upgrade?

Now that my system is fully upgraded to late 2003/early 2004 technology (AMD
AthlonXP 2800+ (Barton core), nVidia nForce400 chipset mobo, AGP 8x video
(128 bit memory interface and 256MB RAM), ATA100 hard drive and SATA DVD
burner), what should I do next? :~)

I don't play games, don't edit video or watch movies, don't compile code. I
really don't think I need anything "better." Running XP SP2 with 1.3GB RAM.

Any dissenting opinions?

Not that you need anything 'better' for what you are doing, but you might
find interest in expanding your horizons re operating system and
applications.

If you built a newer box from pieces and parts not 'cutting edge' but 'on
clearance sale' of technology representing the past 2 years or so, it
would be very very cheap/ economical. Then you could use a KVM switch to
'flip' between your current XP box above and 'the other' newer box. The
newer box could be used for you to experiment with the various linux
distributions.

XP and its associated integrated browser and mailuser/newsreader agent
have a great number of disadvantages compared to some alternatives. The
flipping strategy would allow you to stay on familiar turf with one foot
while venturing out with the other.

You need to/ could/ 'get out and look around' more. As one example
visible in your headers.\ -- your newsreader is OE. Native OE has a
great many deficiencies which need outside support, such as OE QuoteFix,
Nfilter, YProxy, SpamPal for its news and mail functions. Most
'afficionados' or students of Windows newsreaders disparage OE.

All of that being said, I'm currently posting here via OE + QuoteFix under
Win98se, but that's not the only system I use.

Keep what you have now. If anything you could add a little ram but even then,
you are OK.

Windows XP is a far better operating system than Windows 98.
Suggesting otherwise makes clear that you're just looking for
attention. I see you are a regular in (24hoursupport.helpdesk).
That helps answer the question.

Linux is a server operating system. This is a PC users group. Linux
is fine if you have free time on your hands and you are looking for
a hobby. Windows is it if you are trying to functionally push your
computer.

If your computer is fully upgraded, why do you ask?

I go for value. How much can you get for how much? You want to go as far
as you can to avoid another upgrade too soon. You might be able to get
an AMD Sempron 3000 and an ASRock motherboard with PCI express slot and
SATA ports for the same money, if so, why not? It also has Nvidia Gforce
6100 on board with ethernet and sound. Then you'll be ready for the
newer stuff if you upgrade your video or harddrive later on. You may
need a new power supply with that.

Don't spend any money you don't have to. Only upgrade if there is an
application that needs the extra performance.
-and I have a small business selling computers.
