Hi Guys,
just built a new computer, used an ASUS A8V-E SE, 2 Gb Ram Amd 64x2 Cpu, and
a SATA HDD
Ok the building went ok, I have never used a Sata drive before, the computer
failed to recognise the drive, so I looked for drivers on the Mobo CD but
all that was there were:
1. Via 4 in 1 drivers
2. Via Registry (INF) Driver
3. Via Raid Control Driver
4. Make Via 6420 Diver Disk
5. PCI Marvell Yukon Ethernet Driver
6. ALC 97 Audio Driver
Did not find any SATA drivers, I thought I would need to install them during
the installation of Windows Xp SP2, where it asks for Install Third Party
Drivers, then it says no HDD detected. Any way I took it out and put a
PATA drive in, had no problem in installing window
Ok, I must have done something wrong trying to install a Sata drive.
Your advice and help appreciated thanks
Regards
Bob

I don't think the CD will actually make the driver disk, but it has the
drivers on it as the SATA-RAID package drivers. What you would do is copy
this file onto a floppy disk and early in the XP installation Windows will
ask you for the driver disk to make the SATA drive viable. You would place
the disk in the floppy drive and press F6. Windows would copy the drivers
onto the hdd and ...viola!
You are hardly alone when it comes to getting a SATA drive recognized for an
OS installation. Some mb manufacturers design their boards to allow SATA
drives to emulate PATA dives so the consumer is not going through this
hassle. Right now it's a cumbersome system that can easily be frustrating
for the installation.

I upgraded my computer to an ASUS M2MPV-VM early this year and went through
some of the same issues.
#1 If you're not installing a RAID system, you don't need the drivers. The
install disks do generate a floppy with the drivers to be installed during
the Windows XP clean installation but you don't need them unless you're
going RAID.
#2 Your BIOS is similar but different from mine. Under ADVANCED | ONBOARD
DEVICE CONFIGURATION mine has a section named IDE FUNCTION SETUP. Yours
(page 2-27) has OnChip SATA which I assume should be Enabled and SATA MODE
which is set to RAID. The alternative is IDE. I'd guess you want to set it
to IDE if you are not setting up a RAID system. Mine simply lets you
Enable/Disable the SATA ports.

The 6420 driver is for the SATA interface.

Thanks for the advice guys it is apprecitated, not having installed a Sata
drive before, I am sorry if the question annoyed some people, but if you
don't ask you don't learn, there is so much info on the net it becomes
confusing
Thanks and Regards
