Default need ideas re laptop failure

Hi,
I was given an Averatec laptop last year, and it worked fine
after I bought a new power supply for it. Its about 3 years old
running xp home.
Then one day in december 2007, nada. Dead as a door nail.
Power supply works, but nothing at all happens at the keyboard.
It has an 80 gig drive so i took that out and put in in a usb enclosure,
but didn't reformat it, just used it that way.
I was going to put it on ebay, the laptop, without the drive, so got it
our in March to take photos, etc. Got derailed and didn't get back to
it unil a couple of days ago. Just to be certain, i pluggd it in and it lit
up.
Huh?
Boot aborts due to no drive with os.
So this morning put the drive back in it, and I'm using it now to
send this. It's been working fine for about 4 hours.
Any ideas on what can cause symptoms like this. I mean, absolutely
nothing happens, to it's working, after leaving it alone for a long time.
When i took it out in march, it didn't work then. ??

thanks NT, that could explain it. I had concluded the internal ps was
smoked, but now I think it may have been a ckt breaker that somehow reset
after blowing in Dec. All conjecture.
Its still working fine. It ran 15 hours straight the other day with no
problems.
