The manual is poorly written. Just install XP SP1.

Install on an EIDE PATA first before you can add a SATA according to that.

No problems installing OpenSuse 10.3 or 11.0 on that motherboard.
You would be better off asking Linux questions in the appropriate
Linux distribution group though.
