Default M2V-MX SE

Hi.

I have an M2V-MX SE motherboard and was wondering what Hard disk I
could upfrade to. There are some large 500Gs that I am interested in
but thay are SATA2. Can someone tell me if I can use these. I don't
know if the motherboard is a SATA2 or if this technology is backward
compatable.

SATA is meant to be backward compatible.

If there is an issue with the chipset not dealing well
with a SATA drive, you install a jumper on the back of the
drive, to "force" operation at the lower rate. That should
handle the VIA chipset OK.

An example here, on PDF page 11

http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/m...n_guide_en.pdf

"Important Note:

Motherboards and host controllers equipped with VIA VT8237, VT8237R, VT6420,
VT6421L, and SIS760 and SIS964 do not support SATA 300 transfer speeds. For Maxtor
SATA 300 drives to function properly on the VIA chipsets, the Force 150 jumper
must be used. For more information about your system chipset, please refer
to the motherboard or host"

I don't see much here, but this is another place to look for user experiences.

Ok I have checked and the VIA is VT8237S so it should be ok.

If it doesn't work initially, you now know about the "Force 150" jumper
to fix it.
