Intel D850GB not booting up, completely dead light on Motherboard,fan is not working

Hi,

PC Configuration: Intel D850GB motherboard
1.5GHz, Pentium 4
256MB RDRAM (64*4)
64MB nVedia VGA Graphic card
2.1 Creative sound card
OS - Windows XP professional ServicePac 2

My PC was working fine from more than 6 years. Now a day I am facing a
serious problem. When I start the PC it won't start up. I disconnected
my display card, CD Rom, Floppy disk connection, Hard disk connection
and tried to boot. But nothing is happening.

It only displays motherboard light with no beep. I tried to replace
the CMOS battery with new one but still not responding.

I short the bios as described on the Intel web site and removed the
jumper tried to boot but no result.

Here one thing is surprising to me that, after trying to power on &
off for 6 to 7 times and more, some time it starts and works fine.

Else it remains dead - with light on mother board
- Fan is not working
- No display on screen
- No beep

All are requested to guide me for the solution of the same.

I have one of these, and mine uses RAMBUS memory. Is that what yours
uses? You might try re-seating your memory, as the symptom of it having
worked once after several tries could be failing RAM. It could also be
a PS that is not coming up fast enough. In the case of the latter try
another PS of equal or greater wattage. Do all these tests with only
the RAM and a video card installed. Once you see the computer has
started to boot via the monitor you can add on additional components.

Try another power supply.

Since you do not mention the fans spinning when you press the power
button, the problem is likely to be the power supply.

The power switch or the motherboard could also be faulty, but I'd
try the power supply first.

To test the power switch, swap the power switch and the reset switch
cables, and try using the reset switch to turn on the machine. The
reset switch and power switch, are both "normally open" switches, and
can be swapped in an emergency.

Testing the motherboard is a bit more difficult, and requires a
multimeter. You need a way to measure the voltage level on
the PS_ON# signal on the main ATX cable, to figure out whether
the motherboard is sending the signal to switch on the power.
PS_ON# should be close to zero volts, to cause the power supply
to switch on. When PS_ON# is close to 5 volts, that means the
motherboard wants the power supply to be in the "off" state.
