Default Installing 2nd SATA hard drive

How do you set jumpers to put a 2nd SATA drive into a system? It has
been a while, last time I did this was with EIDE drives with a Master /
Slave settings. Do you even have to move the jumpers? For reference,
the 2nd drive is a WD 1600 JD with an 8-pin jumper block.

SATA drives dont use jumpers.........you have a seperate cable and
connection point for each drive.
The Connection points are labeled SATA1 SATA2 etc etc.

Yes they do, just not for the same things as PATA drives did.

SATA jumper examples:

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc....p?p_faqid=1409

Spread spectrum (for EMI control from the cable, effects not generally visible),
PM2 (power management, no idea what the features are),
and the cable rate forcing function (150MB/sec)

I can think of a good reason to have a "clip" jumper, but I don't know
if they support that or not.

It is difficult to get complete jumper setting tables. The label on
the drive is seldom an attempt at being complete. The "OEM manual"
can be a good source of info, if you can find it. The web pages are
somewhere in between.

Thanks. It was a help-over-the-phone type deal for my brother. I've
recovered data off failed hard drives in the past by installing a new
primary, then letting windows fix the old drive (one was a trashed drive
with about 90% recovery, one was a bad boot sector but otherwise full
recovery & use). Unfortunately he didn't have a 2nd cable handy, so
this is one hold.
