I was going to start planning to build my first PC (a high end gaming
rig) within the month or 2. I've been on a bit of a technology hiatus
prior, and went out and bought a preconfigured PC from
cyberpowerpc.com which is now in transit back to them (thank god for
their 30 day gntee).
Since the last couple days I've found out that Core 2 Duo performs
better than AMD and that Quad Cores are out but nothing yet really
supports them.
Also there is DDR3 that just came out and selling at a premium.
Then there is the geforce 8800's which are still selling at a premium,
which i think come december should have somewhat of a decent price
decrease.
So to me, instead of shelling out a grand to build a sytem now, it
would seem to make more sense to wait 6 months and get more out of
that grand. Of course, at that time, I could wait another 6 months,
and another 6 months, ad infinitum but I eventually do want a new
computer ; )
So I think if any time is a good time, 6 months would be perfect -
more DX10 support as far as graphics cards and competition, hopefully,
plus prices will hopefully drop on DDR3 (a bit) and Quad Cores and
maybe mb's.

Never made sense to me to wait. I build a new PC when I need it, and
buy what I need for about $1000. Spending more than that means more
depreciation, and PCs depreciate very quickly, graphic cards even
faster.

Right, and that's my thing - i don't need it *now*. But in 6 months I
will, so I mean i'm answering my own question but I'm sure I'm making
a good decision instead of buying now just to have the latest and
greatest.
.. . . but what you wrote in the original message will always be true, the
quad core will have a future much better speed, the 8900 or 9000 super
gaming card will be coming out, DDR3 will be available in faster speeds,
etc.
The arguments you make today will be valid 6 months from now.

Then wait -- The advice is still correct, "build a new PC when I need
it"
--
If quitters never win, and winners never quit,
what fool came up with, "Quit while you're ahead"?

I've been doing precisely this. My pc is slightly over 5 years 2
months old now (XP1800, ti4200 graphics card) and for the past 2.5
years I've been meaning to buy a new PC, but have kept putting it
off because they keep getting better for the same money.
Beginning of this year I decided I will *definitely* get one this
year and decided to get one in March. But now it's June and I
still haven't. Decided to get a 8800GTS and vista but since no
direct x 10 games out yet that I will now wait until October.
But no, this isn't to say it's a bad idea to wait 6 months. Just
wait as long as possible to get a better one for your money.
