Default Good DVD writer recommendations

I'm about to start building my very first homebuilt computer! So I've
been researching reasonably priced but high quality components - but
I am having difficulties trying to decide on a quality DVD writer
internal optical drive. After doing a bit of research I was thinking
of buying one of these 3 brands:

Samsung
LG
NEC

Can anyone please give me recommendations for particular models of DVD
writer done by either Samsung or LG or NEC?

I don't do much disc burning so this isn't of great importance.

Many thanks

john

I have always been happy with samsung drives. The one I have is rather old now so I have
no new recommendations

If you read the reviews on cdfreaks.com , that may suggest good media
to use with your new purchase. You can easily spend more on test media,
than on the drive itself, so if someone tells you a good brand to use,
you can save on the testing phase of setting up your new drive. (I'd
prefer they just put all the reviews in a big list, rather than how they
currently have their archive arranged.)

http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/NEC-...rformance.html

You can either use the reviews there, or look at the user comments on
the Newegg product pages, as that feedback can also help identify
bad products.

In addition to CDfreaks.com, there's CDRinfo.com, which does very
thorough reviews.

Some of the shopping websites, like FatWallet.com, have discussions
about identifying the actual manufacturers of drives sold under other
brand names, like IOmagic and Emperex. Emperex used to be made by
BTC, but the last one I bought was a Sony/NEC (developed jointly,
supports DVD RAM). If you're near a Fry's, they have an Emperex DVD
drive for $20, after rebate, about every few weeks.

John, I've had great luck with NEC drives. They're quiet and
reliable, which is more than I can say for LG.

I'm build a replacement system for myself, and went with a brand you
didn't list...the LiteOn 20A1L-06 (SATA vs IDE). You can check it out at
LiteOn's website. Here's a link to a review:

http://www.overclockersonline.net/?p...icles&num=1201

LiteOn has a reputation of building good quality, affordable drives -
this one will be replacing a Plextor, which are considerably more expensive.

I am not sure what LG stands for but the one I have been most satisfied
with for the price is Light on. I find that the software that came with
it caused me no problems whereas the HP I bought for much more money
never did interface properly with the Windows that I was using.

My preference has always been for LG. I am using a GSA-H22N - I dont know
if this is the latest version, but it seems to be able to use just about any
type of media (+/-). I am currently using Verbatim or phillips blanks and
have had very few coasters, the ones I have had had been due to errors by me
:-)

LGE = Lucky Goldstar Enterprises. In the early 90s, they sold their
products under the Goldstar brand.

The Goldstar brand was used to market some really crappy budget
consumer products (eg. cheap discount video tapes, VCRs, TVs). They
were basically a competitor to Citizen back then. No surprise why they
distanced themselves from their old brand.
