Default Flaky USB with keyboard

My USB keyboard stops responding with some frequency. I can be typing away
and all of a sudden there is no response. At other times it will either
skip letters or insert two or more of the same one. It is almost as if the
keyboard input routine has stopped polling the KB temporarily.

It will resume functioning after a bit, varying from 10 seconds to a minute
or so. Additionally, it will resume functioning if I unplug it and
immediately plug it back in.

It just started doing this a couple of weeks ago...AFAIK, nothing changed
that would cause it; i.e., no new programs installed, etc.

It is normally plugged into a port on the motherboard header, makes no
difference which. It does the same on other USB ports both powered and
unpowered. Another USB keyboard does the same.

I have tried "uninstalling" the KB and all the USB and HID items in Device
Manager. OS is XP-SP3.

Thhhhhhdg hing has stalled three times while I was typing this post. I
left the errors it spit out at the start of this paragraph to show what it
did when it resumed. The sentence was supposed to be, "The dang thing has
stalled...".

It is very annoying, anybody know what's going on?

Could be the PCI bus being flooded. Have a read up about PCI latency.

Time for a new keyboard.

Nope, don't think so. As I said, it happens with two different keyboards.
