Default Fixed my ADSL modum and now this

Hi all

My ADSL modum died on me , to be more acurate it was the power button the
one for on and off so instead of getting a new one or getting it replaced by
my service provider I opened it and hard wired it to always on. it was a
simple enough operation of soldering a link and it works just great but now
comes the problem.

Since it is always on the only way to turn it off is to remove the power
cord end that goes from the modum, it was fine for a while untill I booted
my pc and it said that my :

\windows\system32\config\system

file was not there or corupt and said to fix it by useing my XP cd and use
the fix option but I tried all that but couldnt fix it so I have just now
done a reinstall of my os. When I pluged in the power for the modum I could
see an ark from the sudden connection. my question is could that ark travel
through the ethernet cable into my pc and dammage a file or two or one
hundred?

Now when I plug in the power to the modum I take the ethernet cable out then
plug in the power and put the ethernet cable back in.

And if it says that the \windows\system32\config\system file is stuffed ever
again how do I fix that file?

Thanks
GK

That error usually pops up when the file is corrupted from a hard drive
error and regularly when people try and overclock a bit too far. I seriously
doubt that it was caused by plugging in/unplugging your modem. That could
possibly kill the modem, but there is no AC route from there to your PC.
Usually, booting to "Last known good configuration" will take care of it,
but not always. A repair install would be the best route since it keeps all
your programs and files intact. My DSL modem and router always stay on to
keep my network up and it has been that way for years without issues. They
use very little power so that is not an issue. I am looking at my modem now
and there isn't even an on/off switch on it.....:-). Just leave it on would
be my suggestion.
