Default cloning question

Problem: 200 megs left on 5 gig drive. Using Acronics, can I clone the
drive to an external 100 gig usb enclosed drive, then copy that to a 10 gig
slave drive in a 2nd PC, then sw the jumper to master and put the 10 Gig in
the original PC and be back in business with 5 Gigs open on the 10 gig
drive? In theory I think this is possible, but i have never cloned a drive.
Thanks for any directions.

I've done this before with Acronis and it will work.
Make note to tellcheck off the box when copying the source drive to the
destination drive that it should adjust to the smaller space. The directions
will be pretty obvious.

You say 'then copy that to a 10 gig...'. You can clone to the 100g
external, then clone to the 10 gig with external connected to the 2nd
machine. (If you put cloning software on both pcs). No 'copying'
involved. Your stated method would probably work ok, but cloning I'm
more sure of. You CAN clone to a smaller drive just fine. Don't use
the automatic methods of Acronis, go manual. I've used Maxtor MaxBlast
cloning, which is a version on Acronis.

Why not put the 10GB drive in the external housing and copy the
5GB drive directly to it, THEN put the 10GB drive into the PC?

Hey, we all have differing opinions, it seems. Just hang the 10-gig
onto your 5-gigger as a slave and clone straight to the 10-gigger! Swap
jumpers & go. sdlomi2

Thanks for all the replys.
This seems like the easiest way to do it.
so... if I clone straight to the 10, then
all i have to do is set it to Master, pull the
5 out of the box, and it will boot off the
10. right?

Your hardware has to be set up. HDs can have 4 primary partitions and
umpteen logical/extended partions. Apart from that, a cloning program
(worth its weight) should do a binary sector adjustment for different
cluster sizes. I use DOS (Norton) Ghost with Ranish for an
arbitrator, and occasionally its Windows counterpart (strictly for
editing DOS *.gho images), and never would have survived past Windows
3.11 w/out it. More command-line switches and parameters than a
barrel of monkeys.

update,
i used acronis 11 trial version.
I put the new drive in the box as a slave.
Cloned to it.
Removed both drives.
Put jumper on the new drive on the master pins
Installed the new dirve,
and it worked!
thanks again for all the help.
