I have looked at specifiations for two motherboards that specifically call for 1.8v memory.
the boards were Intel and MSI. Looking at a few other boards, ASUS and Gigabyte I found no
mention of what voltage memory to use. Is it safe to asumme 1.9 to 2.1 will work if 1.8v is
not specified?
Should one buy the mobo and only buy memory that is certified by the vendor?

Go to the Crucial web site and use their configuration tool. Once you find what
they say, you can look at other brands with the same specs if you want.
FWIW, Crucial is not on the "certified" list for my Gigabyte P35-DS4, but the
Crucial Ballistix RAM I bought works fine.

Some motherboards, usually the least expensive in a given line, lack the
ability to raise Vdimm from 1.8V.
Crucial, Corsair Value, and Mushkin Value PC2-6400 all work well at 1.8V. As
John Weiss suggests, try the memory selector at crucial.com
