can you install linux in a partition on an xp system?
xp pro, 80 gig drive, 4 partitoins,: os, programs, data, and a spare of
10gigs, all ntfs
older duron AMD system: ecs mobo circa 2000 with bios same age. 1.6 g cpu
speed.
fsb is 100 mb/sec i think. 256 mb pc100 ram (2X128), burner, cd, etc.
so i got a linux ubunto disk, and before I do anything stupid I thought I'd
post here
and find out where the alligators are, if any.
I have zero experience with linux. Same with duel booting.
The disk I have will load itself into memory and
then when you reboot it's gone.
It also allows for an install, where it loads onto the hard drive.
2 questions:
uno: will it load into the empty ntfs partion?
dos: If so, how do you tell the mobo to boot to that partiton when you
want to?

It will not use a Windows NTFS or 32 bit partition it will create it's own
Linux partition on empty drive space when you give the command to install.
It will also create a GRUB ( GRand Unified Bootloader ) dual boot loader
which will allow you to select Windows or Linux each time you boot your
system.

Ubuntu will install into whichever partition you choose. Linux works best
with a separate swap partition. Your 10gB partition can be divided into
two logical partitions for root and swap. The installer probably includes
partitioning tools to do this as well as to reformat the partitions to a
linux filesystem.
During the hard drive install, Ubuntu will set up a boot loader that will
run first when you start the machine. It provides a menu selection that
will include both linux and xp: you highlight your choice, press enter.
The Ubuntu newsgroups are very active. Lots of help readily available.
Have fun!

It works; I've played with it, and I encourage you to play with it too.
But my current system doesn't include Linux. It was a fun toy but in
the end it was just too much trouble for no gain that I could discern.

Same here. I used to have dual boot system and it wasn't difficult
at all to install. In the end, however, I found that whenever I *need*
Linux, it's much easier and more conveneient to SSH to a Linux
cluster at work rather than rebooting to Linux locally.

10 gigs and 256mb is very minimal. It will work, I've done it myself.
But you won't be very impressed with the results.

I am using Ubuntu Linux with the following applications installed:
20 minor to medium games
19 graphics programs and utilities
Firefox (Browser)
Thunderbird (Email)
Epiphany (Browser)
Evolution (Email)
aMSN (Instant messaging)
Avast antivirus (It's never found anything)
Skype
GAIM (Instant messenger)
Adobe Reader
OpenOffice complete
Crossover (Windows application interface)
Microsoft Office 2003 complete
There are a ton more applications and utilities too numerous to mention.
The fact of the matter is that this box still runs about as fast (except
for complex graphics) as my Windows XP box which has 1/2 gig of ram, 3.02
GHz Celeron, 160 gig HDD .....
So please, if you're going to give information at least be accurate with
it. Mike's system will suffice just fine running Ubuntu.

Yeah Its no problem, the folks at Chernobyl did it and nothing REALLY bad
happened.........
Re: can you install linux in a partition on an xp system?
I just installed Ubuntu Linux .........you might want to consider my way.
I installed a small IDE HD....60gb which cost me $35.00.
I ran the installer from within Linux (running it off the CD).
It saw the HD .....it also saw the 2 SATA drives......having written down
the ID # I picked the 60gb HD to install to.It Formated and Partitioned the
drive and then
installed itself onto the 60gb HD and did not touch any of the SATA
drives...did not transfer anything from XP ..as far as it was concerned XP
did not exsist.
And better yet as far as XP was concerned Linux did not exist. The 60gb does
show up under Admin Tools/Computer Management but not under Windows
Explorer.
Each drive had its own boot sector...I just needed to set which drive to
boot from in the BIOS...and my BIOS lets me chose when it boots by pressing
the F12 key which HD to boot from.
So when I feel like NOT dual booting anymore I will not have to play with
boot sectors or Grub .....just remove/format the drive
no mess no fuss
