Over 10 years ago, when I first signed on with an Internet service
provider and joined their discussion groups, there were two
technically inclined users discussing Linux. The one was like you,
suggesting that Linux was a mainstream operating system or that it
could be. The other one called Linux "the Holy Grail of personal
computer operating systems". Over 10 years later, that is still
correct (and amusing), and until market forces cease, it will remain
correct.

When you promote Linux as a PC operating system, you show a major lack
of understanding about why Windows is and remains the only viable PC
operating system. When you tell people that Linux is a good personal
computer operating system, you make Microsoft very happy too. You are
some of the best public relations Microsoft doesn't even have to pay
for.

Default John Doe - Professional Spammer

John Doe is a professional User Group killer. His real name and
address was discovered by cross referencing his E-mail address of
several years ago (lshap...@hotmail.com) with an online ad he placed
to sell a used computer.

An investigation paid for by me revealed Mark Bender to have been
arrested twice for domestic violence and to have had a major lawsuit
against him which causes him to live in an impoverished, crack ridden
neighborhood in San Antonion, TX.He is known by his neighbors as El
Gatero Loco, the crazy cat man (and not meant affectionately).

Below my name is the Investigative report on this malacious loser
Mark
Bender.

Martin Markoe, eMicrophones, Inc
Serving the Speech Recognition community for 14 successful years

SUMMARY OF INVESTIGATION

Our office found Mr. Mark Bender's current address is 509 Frost, SATX
78201, to be owned by Ms. Gloria Trevino. There are many rental homes
in this area. Mr. Bender has never owned property. He does not own a
vehicle. He doesn't have a TX Driver's license. He does have a TX
State ID. He has been arrested twice for Assault/Family/Domestic
Violence. Both charges were dismissed. There is a possibility that
the
"Mark Bender" named in the Bexar County Civil case for damages could
be the same Mark Orrin Bender with in this report. The court
documents
would to be ordered at any additional cost to the client.

You have identified the two biggest issues in setting up a Linux system:
partitioning and booting. If you can get past those, you aren't likely
to have much trouble with the rest.

Your hardware should be adequate for the latest Ubuntu (7.04). If you
find it isn't, there are Ubuntu versions designed for much older
hardware. Ubuntu is a good choice as it is easier to set up and seems
to have better interactive performance than Fedora or Suse.

Start by backing up your XP data.

Ten GB of hard drive is plenty for the Ubuntu system. It will leave you
with several GB for data. One way to partition is to select from the
menu something like "manual partitioning". You will delete the 10GB
NTFS partition, giving you 10GB free space. From that you create a swap
partition (say 1 or 2 GB) and use the remainder for an ext3 partition on
which you will mount /.

If you find that your XP system seems to have disappeared, don't panic.
It is probably still there, but the boot arrangement has been messed
up. If that happens, you can get back to your XP system by using the
MS-DOS program FDISK with the option /MBR. In that case you can still
use the Ubuntu CD to boot the Ubuntu system that you installed.

Dual booting complicates things quite a bit. An easier, more relaxing
way to get your feet wet would be to unplug your present hard drive and
plug in a separate drive for experimenting with Linux. An old 5 GB
drive is enough for that. Certainly you can set up a dual-boot system,
but you will have to be a little more prepared and a little more cautious.

In your other post to this group, you referred to someone else as "one
conflicted and confused piece of work".

And in the only other group you have posted to
(can.internet.highspeed), you appear to be a chronic troll shilling
for Linux.

Are you nym shifting? Using sock puppets?

Out of curiosity, I'm trying to figure out why you would be posting to
a Canada newsgroup while your header information points to Germany (or
a German news server).

Inquiring minds need to know.

It's not the first time Dell has offered Linux on its PCs.

There's no reason for the Chinese to use Linux when they steal Windows
for free. That goes for most consumers outside of the United States.
China, Russia, and Brazil don't even have copyright law.

There is no reason why a technically inclined and knowledgeable person
would even promote the idea of using multiple operating systems. The
operating system is a standard programmers write to. Real-world
programmers write for Windows because it's the only way to make money.
Consumers buy a computer to run programs, consumers couldn't care less
whether it includes some pie-in-the-sky operating system.

Linux is a server operating system. Businesses will be lucky if
Microsoft doesn't consume that market too.

Sieg Heil mother****er.

You *really* need to get something resembling a life *******. But then
from what I've seen on this NG, you're pretty much a perverted useless
sack of **** anyway incapable of interacting on a normal level.

Every time someone says "Linux" in this group, you scream "only for
servers" thus making yourself out to be the stupid, ignorant uninformed
******* you really are.

So, why don't ya just **** off because I can keep this up through
eternity.
