Can't get PCI video card to work w/ Intel onboard video

Hi,

A client of mine requested that I set up her computer to use dual
monitors. Her computer has an Intel D915GAG board w/ onboard Intel
video. I purchased an EVGA GeForce 6200 256MB PCI Video Card for the
2nd monitor.

The computer booted into Windows XP successfully w/ the original
monitor connected to the PCI Video port. Driver was installed from
the EVGA supplied CD.

Checked Device Manager to see if both video adapters were working
properly. The Intel onboard video adapter was listed in Device Manager
as "Video Controller" w/ yellow exclamation point. Device Status
indicated driver was not installed. This is strange since there was
no problem w/ the onboard video before the PCI video card was
installed.

Attempted to reinstall Intel video driver from the original Intel
motherboard CD. Partway through the installation the screen went
black. Had to shut down computer by holding in power button 5-10
secs.

Rebooted. Downloaded latest driver from Intel web site. Blue screen
stop error during installation.

What am I missing? Shouldn't this video configuration work?

Have you looked in the bios for any options regarding vga devices. It might
say something like :-
Primary VGA Device:-
Onboard
PCI
Auto
Juggle around till it works or not..maybe that mobo wont support dual video
cards.

In order to have dual monitor using the onboard graphics, you have to
use a special ADD2 video card:

The monitor connected to the ADD2 card has to have a DVI-D connector.

I was wondering if it was something like that, but what does this note
mean from the Intel link you listed:

"Note: An Advanced Digital Display 2 (ADD2) card must be installed as
an additional display adapter for dual monitor capabilities. The GMCH
graphics engine is incapable of operating in parallel with an external
PCI Express* graphics device. The GMCH graphics engine can, however,
work in conjunction with a PCI graphics adapter."

If I understand Intel's note correctly, it should work with the PCI
video card.

Please recommend a dual-head PCIE-16 card at Newegg that I can
exchange for the EVGA GeForce 6200 256MB PCI Video Card I bought at a

The card will drive two independent monitors simultaneously. If both
monitors have VGA connectors, the supplied DVI to VGA adapter converts
the DVI connector on the card to VGA.

This is my first experience with a two monitor setup. Please pardon
my ignorance. My client wants to be able to have one program window
up on one monitor and a different program window up on the other
monitor. Will the previously mentioned MSI card allow her to do this?
Is this what is meant by "extended desktop"?
