What about the round cables for better airflow thru the case?
The flat wide cables seem as if they would restrict airflow.
Don't know what the OP wants to do with the new machine, but I have seen a
lot of posts concerning case heat.

I've never, in all the hundreds I must have bought over the years, had a HDD
or optical device come with cables. But then again, I've only ever bought
OEM drives.

You are more likely to find cables in a "retail" boxed product. So many
vendors now sell "OEM" products in a grocery bag or wrapped in old newspaper,
that makes it hard to get the retail kit. The retail Maxtors I used to buy,
came with a cable and also the U-shaped metal bit for fitting a 3.5" drive
in a 5.25" bay. Very handy. I still have a few spares of the U-shaped metal
bits for emergencies.
The motherboard itself should come with cables. Some motherboards can have
odd mixtures of cables, such as a 40 wire and an 80 wire cable, if there
are two IDE connectors on the board. But a 40 wire cable is a mistake these
days. You should really be getting only 80 wire cables, for their superior
signal quality.
Cables come with the drive of choice; with (kit), or without (oem).

Hi Graham,
The better motherboards (premium and more expensive) usually come with
the cables. Floppy drive cables are *not* usually included these days.
The better IDE (PATA) cables are round and braided. That reduces the
chance for data loss in longer cables and improves airflow in the case.
You can build a much cleaner system with round cables.
IDE cables longer than 18" should be avoided if possible. Cables longer
than this *may* introduce data errors due to crosstalk.
Check the motherboard reviews. They will usually give you a very
detailed description of the accessories since this is usually the first
item a manufacturer pares back to cut costs.

I am about to build a new machine and have only ordered a few bits so far
but they all seem to come without IDE cables?
Can someone give me an idiots guide to what cables to order for my HD DVD
and Floppy drives?
Many thanks
Graham
Id spend a few extra bucks and get the rounded cables for better air flow
just my 2 cents though

Some motherboard manuals, include a short section listing the contents of
the motherboard box. That is one way to discover what is included.
The pictures on Newegg, of motherboard products, also show the box contents.
You can get an idea of what is included, by looking at those pictures.
For cables, I might just visit a local computer store, and see what they've
got on the racks. Considering how much you might pay to have a package couriered
to you, a drive down to the local computer store might be cheaper.
A typical 80 wire (with 40 pin connectors) cable for IDE devices. Suitable
for mixing IDE hard drive and a DVD drive if you want, on the same cable.
(And no, you don't fold the cables like they show in the picture.)
For the floppy cables, there seem to be lots of round ones, but
the prices are higher than I'd like. The flat ones are cheaper
to make, and should as a result, be cheaper to buy.

Thanks guys for the helpful advice!!
P.S. For some reason my DVD drive was retail and boxed but still no cables!
