buying a new notebook

Hey all, I am looking to but a new laptop for university. Should I go
with the Intel core duo or the Amd Turion. I don"t know anyone that
has a Turion so I can"t ask. Is the Turion reliable? If you have one
of these I would really like to hear the pros and cons (if any). I
would like to get something that will get me through 4 years without
shelling out a bundle of cash or having it in a repair center more
times than I care to count. I am currently using a Toshiba Sat. A70.
Intel P-4, 1.5 gig ram (ddr pc2700) 80 gig HD
dvd rom. This machine runs well, is about six years old but has got a
fair bit of weight to it. Any input would be great. thanks in advance.-

There are several models of both the Turion and the Core2Duo. They are
essentially equivalent lines, with the Turion having the edge on cost,
especially at the low end, and Intel having the edge on performance at the high
end. The older CoreDuo will not have the power-saving features of the
Core2Duo.

Look at the relative specs of the CPU models you consider. I think you'll find
that neither AMD nor Intel is really suitable for a 4-year machine using the
low-end CPU. Go with a minimum of the Turion TL-60 with the 65nm (31 watt)
design or the 7xxx series Core2Duo. Also make sure it is not a desktop CPU in
a notebook.

Core Duo and Turion give about the same battery life.

One thing to avoid though is the glossy screens that seem to be the
fashion. They reflect everything.
